1969 Lawn Ranger

Recommended Posts

redidbull

I bought one of these a few years back. http://www.tractordata.com/lawn-tractors/000/4/8/484-wheel-horse-lawn-ranger.html I am starting to do work to the engine and have found that it probably needs some type of new ignition. I also have been having trouble with the linkage for the carb. Question is should I just look for a replacement engine of some sort or rebuild this Tech that is there? I am sure a vert shaft engine shouldn't be too hard to come by. Thanks for any help. Jim

If it were me I would save the headaches of dealing with the Tecumseh and go with a more modern replacement, unless you want to keep it original.

The ignition on a Tecumseh can be a rotten *$(@)&^$%er to deal with and parts are scarce.  If it needs more then points and a condenser the cut your losses.  I started acquiring a couple of parts engines to supply the couple that I have but the more I deal with them the more I am starting to dislike them.

I was thinking that to. I looked at Harbor Freight but they only have a 5.5 Vert shaft. Not sure if that is enough power. I think I will go and see if the lawn mower shop has anything for sale. Thanks. Jim

Thanks on the recommendation. Before I start searching is there anyone who has a vert B&S they would like to sell? I would like at least 5.5hp. Thanks. Jim

I used a Briggs and Stratton 15T212-0160-F8 1150 Series Intek PowerBuilt 11.50 Gross Torque Engine with A 1-Inch Diameter by 2-7/8-Inch Length Crankshaft, Keyway, and 3/8-24 Tapped, $270 from Amazon. The only issue was I had to make a custom exhaust and fuel tank bracket to use the original tank and have the filler come through the original hole in the hood

I found a 4.5hp from a local guy for ~$75. Is that a good price for a good running Briggs? Thanks. Jim

I got the engine yesterday and mounted it to the tractor. The shaft is the wrong size so I will need new pulleys.A couple question:. This engine doesn't have a tradition throttle. It is from a lawn mower that has the throttle tied to the governor I believe.Should I leave it like that? It also has the safety handle on off.hat should I do with that? The engine ran for a second til the clamp I used to hold the safety handle switch. Weird thing is it kinda snapped back when I pulled it like it back fired. I have never had that happen. Can these engines be run with out a blade/load? I thought I had heard that. This engine has not been maintained and it made need a good clean up. Thanks for any help. Jim

Well of its off a push mower then it has an aluminum flywheel so yes there should be a blade to balance it since its on a tractor you will need a cast iron fly wheel from a 3hp Briggs or a 5hp

Not without a cast iron flywheel.

Would having the pulleys on the shaft make any difference? There are 2 and they are heavy. Act kinda like the blade? Thanks. Jim

No sorry it won't work as they don't create balance.

Thanks for the help. I guess my next move is to find an engine with a "heavy" flywheel? Jim

I repowered my tiller with a HF $99 6.5hp, runs fine, seen people use them on round hoods, I say go that route, then rebuild the Techy if you want it original.egeja9ab.jpg

That's what I would use if I had an older horse that needs an engine.

Is the HB vert a heavy flywheel or am I going to have the same problem if I do that? The tech is going bye bye. I will probably offer it up for parts. It was always hard to start, but ran good once it was going. Also the throttle linkage was a PITA. Jim

Don't know if it is, but like I said I've seen quite a few pics of guys using them on tractors, not just WH's..... And mowing and pushing snow, so I'm sure that the flywheel can handle the pressure you throw at it....

I've been away from here for a while with other projects and my job search. If anyone local here in Ct knows of anyone hiring electronic techs, assemblers, electro mechanical assemblers etc please let me know. Anyway I was thinking of just getting rid of my 69 WH but I can't seem to do it. So I went to Amazon and found this. http://www.amazon.co...=heavy flywheel I am pretty sure this will work Please let me know if it will. Thanks. Jim
