J HO 3 #3 Posted May 29, 2014 Can anyone give me some Information from the ID#'s? I know it has a 20 hp Onan Engine What Year? I believe my dad bought it New in 1989? 520-HC?
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,133 #4 Posted May 29, 2014 He could have bought it in late 1989 because it is a 1990 model. Go into the manuals a do a search for 41-20OE01 with a dash. 20 = engine hp O = Onan engine 01 = numbers zero one Garry
J HO 3 #5 Posted May 29, 2014 Thanks, I was having a hard time finding that information.
Ed Kennell 39,145 #6 Posted May 29, 2014 How far are you going with the engine redo ? How many hours ? Has it ever been apart ?
rexman72 210 #7 Posted May 29, 2014 that will be a great project for you
Desko 610 #8 Posted May 29, 2014 Can wait to see her finished as long as the engine doesn't need a complete rebuild it should be good to clean it up on the inside and just put fresh gaskets and seals on it
edwroy 138 #9 Posted May 30, 2014 Toro parts look-up shows it to be a 1990.
J HO 3 #10 Posted May 30, 2014 It has 970 hours. The engine has never been apart (it was still running great). I have not decided how far I am going with the engine it does show evidence oil leaking from the gaskets. What are some of your recommendations? Valve Seals and Gaskets? Here are some pics of things that need to be fixed or replaced. What are some suggestions on how to repair the sub-frame? Thanks J Ho
Tankman 3,520 #11 Posted May 30, 2014 (edited) Looks like my '90 520-8 before I restored the poor old Horse. After a complete tear down, I sand blasted all before painting. New decals from, of course, the Vinyl Guy. Have fun with the project and be sure, we need to know and see, to post updates. Good luck! Ed Kennell 39,145 #14 Posted May 30, 2014 Onan Cummins should have all the parts you need. There are many recent posts here on 520 redos . I just finished my '88 520H. It is located in the tractors under "New ?..Find". Some of the common problem areas are ; Overheating of the rear cylinder .. remove all the tins and clean the cooling fins...while the tin is off, check for oil leak under the oil filter mounting bracket..a new gsket is available from Cummins for ~$4... There is also a gasket available from Cummins for ~ $5 to seal the OD of the filter to the tin to increase the air flow across the rear cyl. also I have vented the belt guard to allow the hot air to escape easier. Surging of the engine..... clean the carb, clean the carb, clean the carb Do a search of Onan surging or carb cleaning to find many threads on how to do this effectively. Electrical problems ...Clean all connectors , lugs, fuse blocks, etc. .. unplug and replug each one at least 3X ... New regulator/Rectifiers are available for ~ $25 If you encounter any electrical problems , post them here and our member electrical guru "SAVE OLD IRON" will guide you to a solution. Have fun with it ....Everyone is here to help

J HO 3 #16 Posted June 1, 2014 (edited) Here are some pics of my sub-frame repair. Original Bolts were tore out. Still have to mock up and drill holes. I added gussets for extra support. Edited June 1, 2014 by J HO
Martin 2,133 #17 Posted June 1, 2014 looking good so far!... one thing i would check with your repair in the last pic is does the belt guard fit right. maybe its just the position of the pic but it looks like you welded some sort of brace underneath the repair. the belt guard fits underneath that area and any extra metal is sometimes in the way. you maybe ok if back far enough to clear the belt guard. maybe you already considered that, but just thought id throw it out there......
J HO 3 #18 Posted June 2, 2014 Thanks, I still have to Mock it up. I tried not to have it stick much further down than the Bolt would stick.

HorseFixer 2,012 #21 Posted June 18, 2014 J HO, TO I restored my 520-H a few years ago you can click on the link of the snow chucker in my signature. I went and rebuilt the complete engine and added a remote oil filter setup for the engine among many other modifications. Looks like its a great project you have going. For engine parts go to onanparts.com Tell TJ what your doing and He will help you with what you need. Good Luck ~Duke
