Butch 194 #1 Posted May 29, 2014 Is the nut on my 1980's 36" mowers blade a 1 1/8 or a 26mm socket? The 1 1/8 seems a little big and I don't have a 26mm socket to check it with.
cheesegrader 433 #2 Posted May 29, 2014 All of my '90's mower blade nuts are 1-1/8"
oldredrider 2,553 #3 Posted May 29, 2014 Wheel Horse didn't use metric nuts and bolts in the 80's.
tunahead72 2,518 #4 Posted May 29, 2014 I can't speak for the 36" deck, but both of my '80's 42" side discharge decks have 1-1/8" blade nuts, and the hex-shaped "nut" at the bottom of the spindle shaft is also 1-1/8". That being said, a 1-1/8" socket fits loosely on those nuts, probably worn somewhat from 30-some years of rotating through all the grass/weeds/sand/mud/gravel I've pushed those decks through. It wouldn't hurt to try a slightly smaller metric wrench if you have one, if my math is correct a 28mm would be the next smaller size.
tarcoleo 119 #5 Posted May 29, 2014 Suggest you buy new nuts once the old ones are off. The new nuts should be no thicker (deep) than the originals or they will be more difficult to remove in the future.
