Questions on D-160 PTO setup

Recommended Posts

the_nite_owl

I have a 76 D-160.

I had to swap out the engine with a similar model Onan from a Sears machine and it is nearly identical except that it has to location for an oil filter and has a smaller output shaft so I could not put on the electric PTO and had to keep the fixed rotation pulleys in place.

I have a Johnson Workhorse Model 10 loader on the machine.

I just picked up a snow blower, plow, mower deck and the parts for the rear PTO.

I am not very familiar with Wheel Horse yet and the PTO setup.  Can I have the rear PTO, front PTO (for the snow blower) and the mid PTO for the mower deck all setup on the machine at the same time?

I will primarily have the FEL on the machine but in winter may switch over to the snow blower.  I want to mount the FEL pump under the front end where the PTO setup for the snow blower will go and will of course have to dismount it when I disconnect the FEL from the tractor.  I just want to know if there are any issues with the various PTOs being in place at the same time and if they are easily removed as needed.  I have not found any information on the PTO setups for this tractor yet.

Thanks.

Trent

The rear PTO is used for a tiller and a rear mower deck. If you dont have these attachments then you will not need the rear PTO. The gear box for the snow blower is driven directly off of the PTO and comes off when the snow blower does, so that should not be an issue. For a standard mowing deck the mule drive is driven directly off of the PTO and mounted to the front attach-matic.

After reading your post again your answer is no you cant have everything hooked up at once. You can however have the rear PTO hooked up with the others but not sure about your FEL pump.

I hope I answered your questions and if not let us know and we can pinpoint it down for you.

Pretty much what I figured.  I have never seen any of these actually in place and in use so I do not have a mental picture of them yet.

The FEL pump was mounted by welding a piece of steel across the front frame in front of the grill for it to bolt onto below the engine pulley.   It was a roughly done job and prevents the grill from being put on the tractor.  I was thinking of moving the pump to below the front end as I have seen on a number of other tractors but want to determine how the snow blower and mower deck will work to make sure it is easy to swap things out again.

As for the rear PTO, I guess it is best to leave it off the tractor in storage so it remains in better condition until it is needed.  I am not likely to get a rototiller anytime soon.

I picked up the snow blower, snow plow, vinyl snow cab, mower deck and rear PTO setup for $300. which I think is a really good deal here in the north east.  I have to go over the snow blower and make sure everything is working properly to get it ready for this winter.  We had some pretty heavy snow fall last winter.

Thanks.

Yes Trent I would say a very good deal.

Do you have the FEL pump hooked up with the new engine in it?

I do have it hooked up.

A previous owner had welded a piece of angle iron across the front for it to mount onto.

When I swapped out engines I no longer had the electric PTO so I had to weld a plate to the bottom of the pump bracket to let me push the pump back a bit further to line up with the pulley.

I plan to move the pump down below so I can put the grill back on.

Well I do see a problem like you said that this onan has a shorter crank end you can't put the electric PTO on and that is the drive pulley for the sears so in no way shape or form you could put a rear PTO on and run it with those small pulleys and couldn't run a deck as there is no way to disengage it right?

The original engine had the electric PTO clutch and a very similar pulley setup.  The pulley in the picture above is actually three sizes in one cast piece with the pump currently setup on the smaller pulley.  The original engine had a similar pulley setup though the sizes varied a bit.

The crank on the other engine was different and has a larger diameter output shaft and that is why I could not put the electric clutch on.  I may look into if I can put an adaptor on there to bring it up to the outputshaft diameter of the original.  Or maybe I will eventually rebuild the other engine.  I have not torn it down to see if there was any other damage done than the shattered piston and rod.

I do not know that the three pulley setup on the old engine is original or not, I do not know what these are supposed to look like and have not seen another to compare it to.

You are correct, there is no way to disengage the PTO.  I could try fabricating something to work similar to how my Simplicity tractors work with a lever to engage the belts.  Essentially using a belt tensioner that is engaged by lever and using a larger belt.  It works well on the Simplicity tractors.

I forgot to mention it came with tire chains also. Yes a very good deal.  Helps make up for how much I paid for the tractor and loader.
