Trouty56 565 #1 Posted May 16, 2014 (edited) I've been wanting to do the wheel hub mod for a while now so I am giving it a try..... Got the hubs at Surplus Center...the 5 bolt low speed hubs for 1" spindles.... Then I got some 3/4 X 1" brass flanged bushings and some 1" X 1 1/4" X 1" brass bushings. Also a couple 3/4 X 2" bolts w/16 thread and a couple castle bolts.... TSC was selling the 3.75 X 8 inch 5 bolt wheels on clearance....got 2 of them.... I think you probably get the idea.....The bushings needed pressed into the bearings....I reversed the inside one to conserve room.....Had I known this I would have just got straight bushings without the flange...I thought I would need the flange to press the bearings together....now I know and can save a bit for the next time...if there is one... The straight bushing was trimmed down for the inner seal to ride on.....it is only about 3/8 inches wide.....all hack sawed and then used the grinder....no lathe in my shop.... Then I cut the spindle down and welded a section of the 3/4 inch bolt on the end...so easy a caveman can do it...well it looks like a caveman did it.... From the outside......still need to drill a hole in the bolt for a cotter pin..... Inside ...seal running on the trimmed bushing...... Total cost...... 2 hubs....33 bucks shipped...Surplus Center bushings, bolts, nuts......25 bucks....Fastenal 2 wheels.....20 bucks Less than 80.... oldredrider 2,548 #3 Posted May 16, 2014 Good job! Just one question...why 5 bolt hubs and not 4?
Trouty56 565 #4 Posted May 16, 2014 Good job! Just one question...why 5 bolt hubs and not 4? Well Paul....the 5 bolt low speed hubs for 1" spindles are cheap...less than 10 bucks....there are high speed hubs w/4 bolts but they are more pricey....like 20 bucks....

PaulC 341 #7 Posted May 17, 2014 I like what u did but why? What wheels are u wanting to run in the front you left that pic out and I'm kind of curious :-)
Trouty56 565 #8 Posted May 17, 2014 I like what u did but why? What wheels are u wanting to run in the front you left that pic out and I'm kind of curious Paul...I like the look of the 4.0/8 tri-rib tires....now I can use rims to fit.... I have tri-ribs on wider rims but don't like the look.... so for 10 bucks a piece I can run narrow 8 inch wheels... Guess I did not take a picture of the wheels.....like these.... Hub set here....http://www.surpluscenter.com/Wheels/Spindles-Wheel-Hubs/5-BOLT-LOW-SPEED-HUB-W-BEARINGS-1-3747.axd
Trouty56 565 #9 Posted May 17, 2014 I have to weld a little brace in the arm pit of the spindle yet for a little support because this mod will increase the stance of the front wheels......the rims are centered ...not offset at all.... Might be 2 inches wider...
Tankman 3,518 #10 Posted May 17, 2014 I like the conversion. Been thinkin' 'bout doing the same for some time. http://www.mfgsupply.com/gomini/gominihubs/az2296.html

shallowwatersailor 3,213 #12 Posted May 17, 2014 Bob, Could you have just used a 3/4"-16 die on the spindle, or are they hardened? John
Trouty56 565 #13 Posted May 17, 2014 Bob, Could you have just used a 3/4"-16 die on the spindle, or are they hardened? John John....I suppose they could be threaded....they are a bit hard.....but they are not long enough. Came right to the end of the spindle with the circlip ends.... So I ended up cutting them to 3 1/2 inches and adding 1 1/4 inches of thread. Post some pics when u have the wheels on the tractor id like to see them Will do Paul..... shallowwatersailor 3,213 #14 Posted May 17, 2014 I thought that might be the problem with being too short. Thanks!
Trouty56 565 #15 Posted May 25, 2014 Post some pics when u have the wheels on the tractor id like to see them Here you go....I cheaped out on the lug nuts...stole them off an old jeep....pretty common size....and a caved the hub cover putting it on.... I was up all night tending the smoker so I finished up the hub conversion.....so what is in the smoker???? Deer roast.....Pork shoulder.....beef brisket (trying for the first time....looks like it will be tasty).....

Trouty56 565 #18 Posted May 26, 2014 Looks really good Bob.... and the hub conversion too! So which was your favorite? Was thinking just the same.... Tough choice...Pork is always great....the briskit was a has two parts...a lean side and a grainy side.....grainy side is best...but I definitely will do it again...deer roast was really good too....Oh the hubs worked out great......but really...I had my daughter and her friends over for food...(young 20 somethings)....and the time with her was the best....
