Series I

Bummer, but it is not the end of the world.  In generators even the series 1 is fine.  Why........because they operate in a stationary application.  They starve for oil when tilted.  So if you operate on flat ground you will be fine.  If you do pop a rod, it will be almost impossible to repair.  You will need to locate a series II engine and those can be hard to come by.  Others say to overfill 1/4 qt will help as well.  Other than that, the rest of the engine is great.  Super powerful, and very smooth.

Thats a good find for only having to turn on the gas valve and put some starter fluid in. I had problems with mine till I found the gas valve. Heh.

I have a series 1 that came from my brothers JD 317 and has well over 2000 hours on it.  Smokes a bit on start up but runs just fine.  He always changed teh oil and kept iot full.  Also his yard wasn't particularly hilly.
