pfrederi 18,000 #2 Posted May 5, 2014 I assume the hole is in the bottom of the transmission case. If so most likely scenario is a bolt in the differential broke or fell out then got wedged between the differential gear or bull gear and the case breaking the cast iron housing. You will need a replacement housing.and maybe a differential or bull gear. if you are lucky only one side is damaged. Check with Kelley here or another vendor about case halves. You will have to drop the transmission and split the case which will require removing the hubs ...not always an easy job.. Download the Sundstrand manual from here page 57 gives pretty good instruction on how to tackle this... You will want to replace the differential bolts with grade 8 (or even Grade 9)
ol550 830 #3 Posted May 5, 2014 If you decide to tackle this. The hubs are the most likely grown to the axles. When I split my case last winter I left the hubs on and split the case far enough to get the differential case bolts out took the side gears off and took the hub and axles to the press. Press jumped a couple inches off the floor when they first came loose. Took a while to round up the parts but got R done.
