stratostar250 919 #1 Posted May 4, 2014 Hey all, I wasn't sure whether to put this in the main tractor section or this, but I figure it is driveline related, so I put it here. So, I am wondering what could possibly be going on with my '86 310-8. Lately, I've been noticing that it is REALLY tough to not pull a wheelie while taking off in 2nd or 3rd gear, high range. If I really concentrate, I can slip the clutch for a little bit and take off alright, but the belt squeals quite a bit while doing this, and i think that this clutch grabs much quicker (has a shorter engaging period thru the pedal travel) than my other tractors. I am just interested if you guys feel that this is normal, or not. I do feel like I have some weird symptoms though. The belt squeaks quite a bit while letting out the clutch, in pretty much any gear in high range, and it is a new Wheel Horse/Toro belt that I put on a few months ago (also put on a new clutch pulley) Another thing is that, when I press the clutch pedal in, it seems to make quite a weird rattling noise, I haven't taken the time to see where exactly it is coming from, but, it is quite an odd rattle, and the belt doesn't seem to come to a complete stop, or maybe bounce around alot, but when this happens, I can press the clutch, with quite a bit of pressure, forward a tiny bit more, the pedal seems like it "clicks" foreward and the the belt does stop then. I was just wondering if this all seems normal to you guys, or if you think something is installed improperly/needs an adjustment, or some part is on its way out. Thanks for all your input guys! dcrage 628 #2 Posted May 4, 2014 The "rattle" is probably your drive belt whipping up and down inside the belt guard. I have a 310-8 that makes that same noise.
doc724 925 #3 Posted May 4, 2014 To put the new belt on you had to remove the side panel (belt guard). When you reinstalled it, you may have pushed it too far in. There is very little clearance between the clutch pulley and the side panel. With the engine not running, have someone push on the clutch pedal and from under the tractor, check to unsure that the pulley does not hit it. I had this problem on my C141. However, the root cause was the bearings in the idler pulley were 35 years old and wobbled a bit. A new pulley and careful reinstall of the side panel cured it. Did some looking and investigating today, and this is what this is, so I'm not worried about that noise anymore, haha, thanks! To put the new belt on you had to remove the side panel (belt guard). I can see how this would happen, although I took the side panel off and drove it around, and it acted the exact same. Thanks though!
LFDRET 21 #5 Posted May 4, 2014 (edited) I was told by a guy at motion industries, That if you would switch to a Kevlar belt it would help with the belt grabing so fast. Kevlar belts will slip alittle before gabbing. thus helping with the wheelies - or you might try a bit bigger belt so there is more peddle before it grabs. New belt will stretch after awhile and might also help. hope this will help Bill Edited May 4, 2014 by LFDRET
