3 speed tranny question?

Recommended Posts

Is there a way to make an old 3 speed tranny strong? I'm pulling some trailers with a 1056 and I'm scared the tranny might blow,I have put a larger pully on the tranny and put a lot of weight on it,but I'm scared it might strip.so I need a way to make it stronger.

Your 1056 should have the #5053 transmission in it.  That is the latest version of the #5025 3 speed uni-drive.  I have no idea how you would make the best 3 speed out there "stronger".  Along what lines are you thinking?  You should be fine pulling trailers around, unless you are popping the clutch at high revs and doing wheelies.  :)  If you do break something...parts are out there to fix it. :eusa-think:   Some more information (like what kind of trailers, what kind of terrain) may be helpful here.

I bet you're thinking about welding up the gears, and making a posi out of it?    :eusa-think:

I always figured the belt would snap before the gears would strip....all things being equal.

Just run it, if you ever manage to grenade it (and I seriously doubt you ever will) 6 speeds are plentiful as well as 3 speeds and most will bolt right up.  About the only thing to worry about on these is if the bearings and seals are in good shape.  Also change the fluid every coulple years and make sure no water got in and your good to go.

We have some pullers on here that regularly put 35HP plus in these trannys with no modifications at all.
