oldredrider 2,548 #1 Posted April 16, 2014 I don't know much about these two models so educate me. I recently acquired what I was told is a 953 but it has a 1054 decal on the hood. Can't find any model tags on it. Sooooo what are the mechanical differences on these two models? It's kinda ratty looking so any input is helpful.
KATO 115 #2 Posted April 16, 2014 953 =1963 9hp 1054=1964 10hp Basically the same tractor manuals for both are in the manuals section
Lane Ranger 10,943 #3 Posted April 16, 2014 953 might have a Ross Steering gear instead of a fan gear BUT 1/2 of them do have fan gears!
64s 83 #4 Posted April 16, 2014 As Lane Ranger said, if it has a fan style steering gear, it could be either model. If its the Ross style, its a 953. If the engine is original, the 953 would have a K241S-46135A, the 1054 would be K241S-46215A.
"D"- Man 827 #5 Posted April 16, 2014 Posting a picture may help, with ID-ing assuming all is original (excepting for the hood decal.) There may be some tel-tale signs to indicate wheather it's a 953 or 1054(A.) The headlight buckets/lenses were different, I think the grill housing and the seat frame was different. You can check to see the build date code for the starter/generator on the oval I.D. tag, again assuming it is original. Mark.
prondzy 3,881 #6 Posted April 16, 2014 Each had different headlights. The 953 had the smaller diameter headlights (both had different plastic lens design) If you have the lenses in the grill the easiest thing to do would be to compare the lenses to those on Glen Pettit's vendor link.
oldredrider 2,548 #7 Posted April 16, 2014 (edited) OK, all of your posts have helped a lot so here's what I've got so far... The engine # is K241s-46135A Has the fan gear steering. Does not have headlight lenses but buckets measure 3 1/4" across. From the input I've gotten from y'all, it's a hybrid...correct me if I'm wrong! The tractor is kinda buried in the barn so maybe this weekend I can get it out and shoot some pictures. Thanks for all your help. 64s 83 #8 Posted April 17, 2014 My guess would be an early 1054, with a leftover 953 engine. I would date it by the lense buckets.
953 nut 55,001 #9 Posted April 17, 2014 I love the big boy toys , RJs and Suburbans are cute (and I have a few of them too) but I like my 953s the most. The second half of the 1963 line used the same fan gear steering and the larger headlights, same as the 1054 and 1054A. No way to know what parts have been changed over the years but I would think that with a 1963 engine that it is a 953. The important thing is that you are proud of it and have fun with it.
oldredrider 2,548 #10 Posted April 24, 2014 (edited) Ok...got some pics. 953 or 1054? Edited April 24, 2014 by oldredrider
prondzy 3,881 #11 Posted April 24, 2014 You have a 1054, I just checked my 953 and mine appears to have smaller headlights, also the 953 have gold headlight buckets. This would be the only true indicator along with the decals to say you have a 1054. Going by the engine numbers and dates doesn't really work because WH was notorious for using up previous stock on next year models.
953 nut 55,001 #12 Posted April 25, 2014 Early production 953s have the smaller headlights, the later ones have the larger ones.
hcminis 1,555 #13 Posted April 25, 2014 (edited) looks like fun. Doesn't it say "1054" on the hood. At least that's what it looks like to me. EDIT...never mind. Just read above. Sorry. Edited April 25, 2014 by hcminis
