Aftermarket Kohler carb??

Anyone use an aftermarket "Kohler" carb? Looking at one on E-bay for possible use on my 1054. These are pics from the ad.

Thought? Pro's? Con's?

I would try one if the price is right Mike...

I know the Chinese knock off Techy carbs Ebay offers worked flawlessly for me. 

Would bet they're all coming from the same place.

If they are anything like the after-market Tecumseh carburetors that I bought this winter for a couple of snow blowers, I'd say go for it. The Techy ones worked great.

I remember you (Craig) having success with your aftermarket Tecumseh carb, that's why I thought this might be a good way to go. By the time I buy a genuine used carb and invest time and money into it I could have unpacked this one, installed it and be off and running. I really want this 1054 to be my tractor show putt-putt but with work and travel have very limited time to work on it. Once again I'll be in Georgia Monday for a two week job so nothing on the 1054 gets done. Before I know it the Zagray show will be here and I wont have it done. This carb could be a great time saver!

Yes I got one - and actually it was also for a 1054! This was last summer and when it came in I was very pleased with appearance/fit/finish etc it and bolted right up and went to install cables --- uh oh, the choke butterfly was backward! Oh well, the butterfly/shaft off the old carb was good and I just switched them out. I see from the pics that they must have addressed that problem since theyre showing the other shaft.

 

Oh, and the 1054 apparently could care less that a Chinese product was giving it fuel - it ran perfectly... and hey, the cost was real easy to swallow compared to other brands!

I know the 10 and 12 HP Kohler knockoff carbs have been good operating ones (we have two of them) and I have been waiting to see how the 8 HP ones work that came out late last year.

I purchased one for my 312-8 mag, it works great just like the kohler 26  I purchased another one for my C-121 but it is still in the box. ( A word of caution before you order ) The ones for the mags have the choke butterfly working in the opposite direction, so make sure you let them know which one you want. I was told these carbs were made to the kohler specs. Hope this helps.

The one I got for the 314 had issues ... Leaked fuel out the vent hole       Ended up rebuilding the old one

...UPDATE...

  While I was away for work the carb showed up packaged well (no damage). I'm back home now and had a bit of time today so I installed it on the 1054. It comes with a choke lever installed and another one if you need a different style, I needed to swap it out of course, nice and easy to do. Got it installed and when the Kohler fired up it ran PERFECT!!  The carb needs absolutely no adjustment whatsoever and so far I'm thrilled!

  So I need to get a few more things straightened out with this tractor and she will be ready for putt-putting around the shows. The Zagray show here in Ct. is next weekend and its looking like I'll have it ready for Saturday   !

That's great to hear Mike. The aftermarket carbs that I have been getting for the Tecumseh's have been fine. It hardly seems worth it to spend more than a short time working on an old carb when you can pop a new one on for that little money.

Exactly Bob....and I still have the original carb that I can mothball or redo at my leisure.

I bought one about 4 years ago,it came with the wrong setup for the choke and I told them exactly what it was for,but other than that it has worked perfectly,and it was a lot cheaper than a kohler

_{I'm glad to hear these work ok.  I just started reassembling the carb for the C145 and part where the main jet screws in and the bowl screw also goes, is cracked down to the jet.  My spare has some problems also.  I noticed the pics that even the casting on the aftermarket carbs is cleaner than OEM.}

I just got one of these yesterday, glad to hear your works good. Did you have to set the float on yours? I have always heard the floats need set and the one I got did. But overall they seem like a nice carb. I probably won't be using mine for a while to find out how it does.

So far it has ran great, I have probably 20 minutes run time on it and its been flawless and needed no adjustments.

I have the exact one on my c 141 and it keeps flooding on me I have adjusted the float I am out of ideas to make it work. when it iss running at full throttle it is ok till I go up or down a hill then it floods out again. Good luck if you get one.

Has anyone had to change the fuel line fitting on these carbs? My old one doesn't seem to fit and I don't want to force it. I'm thinking the threads might be metric?

They may be. I bought one, and in trying to make some modifications I found that all the threads are metric, even the little screws that hold throttle and choke plates onto the shafts. Usually when the Chinese reproduce an American product, they are so accurate that they even use SAE hardware. But on these carburetors it's not the case. I can't speak for all of them, but I know the one that I bought was metric.

I was gonna put a new fitting on mine but couldnt get it to go, but when I tried the old fitting it started - tho a bit snug. Since the old one was OK I just went ahead and used it, didnt even cross my mind that it might be metric

I was just told by the company I purchased it from that it would be tight. If it broke they would take care of it. I got it in about two full turns. Think that is enough?

IIRC 2 or so turns was about what I got when I used my old fitting, it didnt go in as far as the old carb. Sounds like if I had made a little more effort I couldve got the new fitting on....
