Set screw/Non set screw Transmission Pulley

Any reason why some Tranny pulleys have a set screw and some do not?

The parts list for the Eaton 1100 on the Workhorse shows it having one but it doesn't have one. when I replaced the sheared off hydro fan bolt, I noted that the pulley (part # 108316) was migrating off the shaft.  I guess this is what caused the bolt head to come off.  I still had to use a gear puller to get the pulley off.

my 88 520 parts list has the same pulley number but it doesn't show a set screw. :eusa-think:

was it also a difference between a 8 speed vs hydro thing?

I have a 520 and a C145 1100 pulley here and no set screw in either.

seems strange that some of the pulleys have a set screw and some don't.

not sure if they were added on later models as a improvement, like the addition of the 2nd set screw for the hubs.

you are better off with a set screw in the pulley I have seen the non set screw pulleys center bore and pump shaft become worn and allow the pulley to shake a slight amount

this causes a vibration in the drive belt which you hear as a metallic ring in the belt guard

be sure to use anti-seze on the pulley and set screw
