bmsgaffer 2,043 #1 Posted March 25, 2014 (edited) Unfortunately, it was not for me, but I found this package deal and got my brother in law to purchase it since he was tired of his "Home Depot Deere". 465 hours, came with tiller, blade, weights, 52" deck all for $3200. I think it was a decent deal but it needs a hydro pedal return spring, new foot rests (rusted through), and I think we are going to buy a new tunnel cover to get rid of a little rust (cheaper than repairing the rust and repainting). It didn't smoke, hydro was smooth and quiet, power steering worked well (I have never driven anything like that before, i have mixed feelings on the power steering!) and no leaks that I could find. My expertise is in the blackhoods so was this a decent deal? He is already looking for a FEL for it. All the pictures are from the ad. Didn't get a chance to take my own. Hodge71 664 #2 Posted March 25, 2014 My personal feeling is its a bit high..but only maybe 200 bucks or so...I would say its a great setup...a true 4 season tractor and implements
bmsgaffer 2,043 #3 Posted March 25, 2014 I told my brother in law when we were there that I would pay no more than 3k. Unfortunately the guy thought he was selling gold and wouldn't budge. Since we were only a couple hundred off, he went for it figuring that this is not a GREAT deal, but not a BAD deal either. I think he already has the new body panels on order so with a little elbow grease and polishing this tractor should look like new.
doc724 925 #4 Posted March 26, 2014 In my experience, here on the east coast, this price was reasonable. I paid about the same a few years back for my 520xi (no power steering). However, it had a blower, but no tiller. You will enjoy this machine. I cannot recall if there is a return spring on the hydro pedal or not, the pedal should automatically come back to the neutral position. There is a cam (neutral) adjustment, accessible under the right rear wheel. Download the Toro manuals (i think downloads are free)
leeave96 487 #5 Posted March 26, 2014 Considering the hours the the unique to the 5xi series attachments, you probably did OK. Nice looking tractor!
rexman72 210 #6 Posted March 26, 2014 looks like a nice tractor
dennist 139 #7 Posted March 26, 2014 I stopped into my local dealer and he let me know he had a complete used tiller for an xi that he would sell for 1000, so I would say he did fine, especially if it was what he wanted. Such a smooth running tractor with those attachments will make him smile for a long time.

Forest Road 594 #9 Posted March 26, 2014 Well done! Here in NJ that would be a fare price. I have a 522xi FEL with 1100 hours and she's still going strong. All of the linkage on my tractor was loose when I purchased it. All the steering linkage as well as the foot pedal. Be sure to give it a good going over with locktite. The only problem I've had is frozen power steering. It's not kept in a garage so I cover the entire engine compartment w a moving blanket and leave it running for a 1/2 hour. The power steering seems to freeze easily, once it gets wet/snow even if you have undercover with the cold it freezes. Tap the tie-rods and usually frees up instantly. bmsgaffer 2,043 #11 Posted March 26, 2014 All good things to know. Thanks for the info fellas! How do you like the power steering? I like how easy it is to turn, but I hate that I cant feel anything as far as the feedback from the ground. The foot pedal had no resistance either (because of the spring) which didn't help and made the tractor feel very disconnected. Oh and on top of all that the PO had armor-all'd EVERYTHING from the footrests to the seat, so everything was slippery (dont EVER silicone/ArmorAll anything you stand on, sit on, or handle). Once we get all the bits and pieces tightened up and fixed I will have to give it another assessment. I really liked how quiet and smooth the thing was though. shallowwatersailor 3,213 #12 Posted March 26, 2014 Considering the hours the the unique to the 5xi series attachments, you probably did OK. Nice looking tractor! It looks like a good deal with everything included plus the hours that it has been used. I like both of my 5xi. The tractor is the easiest item to buy of the bunch; it's the attachments that are scarce/outlandishly expensive. I hope that it has the Rear Attach-A-Matic installed (couldn't tell from the photos) so that you can use the plow and tiller as it is specific to the 5xi. It is shown in the one photo. Change all the fluids, filters, and put Mobil 1 10W-30 in the transaxle. Re-check after some use as it will go down. There is also a filter screen in the hydraulic line for the power steering that should be cleaned. Hopefully it isn't caked in grass clippings as the Kohler Command will need to be pulled to get at the left cylinder if it runs hot because of the engine shrouds. It is a nice solid machine and easy, to a degree, to work on otherwise. This one is not even at half life yet. And buy a 2" receiver hitch from Tom Rupprecht as well. Enjoy!
Bow_Extreme 544 #13 Posted March 28, 2014 Please let me know if your brother in law would like to sell the attachments at some point. I would be very interested. Thanks Nice machine!!
bmsgaffer 2,043 #14 Posted March 29, 2014 I'm not sure if hes keeping the tiller or not, so shoot me an offer and I will pass it on.
RMCIII 838 #15 Posted March 29, 2014 Like John mentioned, do not see the rear attach-a-matic in the photos, so hope it is already on the tractor.... If he decides to sell the tiller, he should not have any issues selling it... VT has them listed, brand new, for $1,599.00...
RMCIII 838 #16 Posted March 29, 2014 Someone snagged the 520xi, that was listed here in Akron-Cleveland.... They were only asking $695.00, had only the deck, blade, weights, chains.....
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,330 #17 Posted March 29, 2014 What is the difference between the 520 xi and 520 lxi? I may be looking at the 520 xi. Any info on them would be good. Thanks-
RMCIII 838 #18 Posted March 29, 2014 (edited) Other than the engine and the lxi also has power steering, but the xi does not, nothing...... But the LXI is liquid cooled Kawasaki..... You will not be disappointed, if you are able, to walk away with it at a price you are happy with...... Edited March 29, 2014 by RMCIII
