formariz 11,987 #1 Posted March 20, 2014 I see that all head bolts use a rather thick washer. Can someone enlighten me as to why and what are the requirements for it? Is it supposed to be same grade of bolt, or is it supposed to be the shock absorbing type. Thank you.
rmaynard 15,408 #2 Posted March 20, 2014 Head bolt washers are made from heat-treated, parallel-ground steel. They are precision ground to provide for two perfectly machined surfaces to allow for more accurate torquing.
sorekiwi 761 #3 Posted March 20, 2014 When replacing them I use hardened washers from McMaster Carr Being hardened the bolts don't tear them up, and they keep a consistent load on the bolt.
KATO 115 #4 Posted March 20, 2014 Also the older Tecumseh motors used a Bellville washer (cupped) to keep consistent torque on head gaskets with hot and cold cycles.
"D"- Man 827 #5 Posted March 21, 2014 Thanks for asking, Formariz, I had the same question but just never asked. I was getting ready to place a McMaster Carr order so I now will just add the washers to it.
