How to prevent brake/clutch pulley from hitting seat pan on a 856?

How/what do I do to prevent the brake/clutch pulley from hitting the seat pan when the pedal is not engaged? I cant get the seat to sit flat and latch because its hitting the pulley. What am missing? with the spring hooked up to the park break lever and axle it pulls the pulley up high enough to hit the seat. Also one the brake/clutch pedal is there something that prevents the peddle from "falling back" another 1-2" from the upright position? I wish I could get pictures to upload here. Photo bucket sucks and doesn't seem to work well here.

Are you sure that you have the right size drive belt?  The belt should go tight before the idler pulley comes up far enough to hit anything.

Is the belt guard on and all the guides there?

Really sounds like the belt is way to long to start with, second when you get that fixed the belt guard needs to be installed or the clutch will not work right, and with the right size belt the pedal should be in the correct position at rest.

I hate sounding like a idiot asking these questions. I didn't own this machine very long before it was taken down and that's the way it was for approx. 2-3 years. Got married, bought a house(fixer upper) and had first child ten months ago. Long story short I finally am getting really close to the light at the end of the tunnel thanks to all of your much needed help. I didn't plan on not getting back to it for that long of time but it happened.

Well my problem was an easy fix. I didn't have the belt on...................I know im an idiot but they don't tell you this stuff in the manual!! LOL belt fixed the problem. thanks for the help and im sure I have a few more as the final assy continues.

Kelly...I have been having trouble getting pics to load. I use photobucket and used to have no issues with the "copy and paste" method. now it just never seems to copy. I will try again.

Well, well. When you are buying a house, just getting married, having little ones running around, making ends meet, working on the house while you hold down your day job..................of course your going to have idiot moments! 99% of us have gone through that! And 99% of we old guys would trade the world to get back to those daze! You just enjoy those kids, that wife, that house and this time in your life and don't even think about the mental lapses!

When you do get older, you'll be able to remember some obscure band and song that nobody gives a s*#t about but you won't remember where you parked your car! You'll even remember not having the belt hooked up to your tractor 25 years from now but you will forget where you put the tool you just had in your hand!. Your wife will tell you that your a man. Men forget stuff Don't worry about it! Eventually, you'll forget she told you that!

Thanks for the laugh BooVuc. Im enjoying every minute of it. We were blessed with an amazing boy and it has been the best journey of my life. I can not wait for the day to come and soon it will that I sit him on my lap for the first ride around the yard on the old 856. He certainly has been part of the "fire under my ass" to get it back together. Thank you for the reassurance that its ok to be "ding dong" now and then.
