AKincer 6 #1 Posted February 24, 2014 So I have a leaky brake shaft seal. The shaft is 3/4 and it looks like I can get the seal from NAPA (Either SKF7410 or CR7410). I will be removing with a small set of picks and installing with ground down piece of 3/4 pvc as suggested in other threads. Do I need to drain the gear lube before starting? I assume some will drain out, but if it will only be a little, I can just put a drip pan underneath. If it's going to pour out and and make a big mess, then I guess I would be better served to drain first. I would appreciate any advice from others who have done this procedure. stevasaurus 22,881 #2 Posted February 24, 2014 (edited) You do not have to drain if the horse is level. Almost none will come out. Make sure to file any burrs on the shaft and key way before installing new seal. Some members like to use a piece of tape to cover the end of the shaft to be sure not to damage the new seal. oldlineman 1,482 #3 Posted February 24, 2014 As Steve said there will be little if any come out and if you have that side jacked up with the wheel off that would take oil away from that side of the tranny.
