Jrblanke 857 #1 Posted February 11, 2014 I picked up some chrome wheel covers this past weekend that came off of a 92 520. They do not have any dents but have some light rust and I would like to know the best way to remove the rust without damaging the chrome. The second question, is how do I keep the rust from coming back? Should I paint the wheel cover with clear coat? I am worried that it will yellow over time. Thanks, James

MalMac 1,331 #4 Posted February 11, 2014 I have used Brillo or SOS pads to get rust off with success. Just don't scrub do hard that you put scratch marks in the Crome.
312Hydro 474 #6 Posted February 11, 2014 Never Dull and Mothers both work great. Then wax and buff. I put wax on the inside too and I don't wipe it off.
wallfish 16,971 #7 Posted February 11, 2014 Aluminum foil to clean them and wax to keep them. Do a youtube search for using foil to clean chrome. I was surprised how well it works and it works without leaving scratch marks. here's one video but I just use water. Haven't tried the Coke or Vinegar yet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkHyARsjNEg I use this method for cleaning chrome handles on old O&R tools

Jrblanke 857 #11 Posted February 11, 2014 Ok, because you asked, This is a before picture. I was drinking a coke and decided to try the foil method. To my suprise, after about 4 minutes, I had this result: I have to spend some more time on them, but it was cool to see such quick results. I believe I am going to use my mothers mag wheel polish on them to finish them up.
Wheel-N-It 2,968 #12 Posted February 11, 2014 James, the name of the rust remover you asked me about is EVAPO-RUST. You can buy it at Advance Auto. Its Bio Degradeable and you can reuse it. It will take off all the rust on your wheel covers and leave them nice and shiney.
papaglide 542 #13 Posted February 12, 2014 I used coke and aluminum foil on the muffler guard on my 417-A. It cleaned up the rust awesome BUT left tints of color similar to oil laying on water on it. Can't really see it in this picture but it's there. Not sure what to do about that...
Jrblanke 857 #14 Posted February 12, 2014 That 417A looks good! Van, I completely forgot about Evap-o-rust. We used that stuff at work. In fact, I made this fun little picture to send to some people here at the office using my avatar picture. I can't believe I forgot about evaporust.

953 nut 55,003 #16 Posted February 12, 2014 Navel jelly and most other rust removers like Ospho are made with phosphoric acid. Oh by the way, Coke has lots of phosphoric acid too! Coke anyone?
Jrblanke 857 #17 Posted February 12, 2014 It was definitely....disturbing to know that I was drinking the same stuff that was eating the rust off of the hub caps. Cheers

darg 7 #19 Posted February 15, 2014 I have used clear lacquer spray after the finish is complete to protect finish
WheelHorse_of_course 99 #20 Posted February 15, 2014 IIRC correctly simichrome would work and leaves a protective layer.
RMCIII 838 #21 Posted February 15, 2014 I have used clear lacquer spray after the finish is complete to protect finish You can also get "clear" wheel paint at any auto parts place. I use that all the time..... Once I have something to my likings, I put about 3 coats on it.... Amazing finish if you take your time and keep all the dust out or away from the area...... boovuc 1,090 #22 Posted February 15, 2014 Once I have the rust or pitting off of chrome, I use Never Dull. That stuff is great and I bought a can of it at a yard sale that had to be over twenty years old and other than being a tan color, it still works great.
