Chinese Carburetor on a Tecumseh

Recommended Posts

rmaynard

My next door neighbor has an MTD snow blower with a Tecumseh engine. The snow blower has not been started for 2 years, and when he tried to start it during the last snow, it failed. It would run with starter fluid, so I knew what the problem was. I took the carburetor off and found it to be totally gummed up. I tried my best to clean it. I spent about 3 hours on it and finally said the heck with it. I went on eBay and ordered a Chinese knock-off carburetor for $22.00 delivered. The carb arrived last week, and with today's temperatures hovering around 55, I decided there wouldn't be a better time to try it out. considering that 6" of snow is predicted for tonight and Monday.

The carburetor was a direct fit. Bolted right up. I turned on the gas, one pull of the cord, and it fired right up and ran like a Kohler.

That's great to know, no more carb kits just replace.

Just did one of those on my Ariens blower with Tecumseh engine and although is fired right up its surging like crazy. I am not sure what the problem is but i just hate myself for getting it, just because i was to lazy to clean the old one. Serves me right for not practicing what i preach. No more chinese stuff. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

I have one on my lawn ranger and it works well but the other two tecky's I have have rebuilds on, to be honest I can't tell the difference.  I say if the body is good shape rebuild it, if it's worn out replace it, at least your not buying a complete C.H. INA co. motor.  Besides I am perty sure that all Tecumseh parts are made over there anyways.

formariz - check to be sure that the spring from the throttle control is attached to the governor arm.

Also, since these Chinese carbs are factory set with no main jet adjustment, you may have to play with the spring position on the governor.

The neighbor started the MTD this morning with no problems, and it ran like it was supposed to.  He just finished snow blowing his driveway.

SousaKerry - the last genuine Tecumseh carb kit that I bought said "Made in China".

This one had no drain on the bottom, no main adjustment on the bottom, and the low speed adjustment was recessed on the side. I had my doubts when I saw it, but I was pleasantly surprised with it's performance.

This may be better suited in a new topic, but my new Commando 6 carb is pulled apart and looks to be missing some components.  Maybe just in the float bowl, but someone's been in there.

a) has anyone ever tried to put a Kohler carb on a Tecky?  They appear quite similar linkage wise and bolt patterns on the block look close according to my eyecrometer.

b) I assume the China carbs haven’t changed much in 4 or 5 years.  I’m sure I’d be best off just grabbing one and calling it a day.

I’m up for that challenge!  I don’t know as if I have a great Kohler carb, but the one I’m thinking of DID run last I knew.  The shaft is worn out.

I’ve thought about that too... I might wander out to the shop and see if mine will swap later this evening or this weekend.

After all, a carb don’t care what is sucking on it!

As long as it has the same inside diameter the CFMs will be about right.

As my grandmother would say, now that's a piece of work.
