My Grandfather's old 416-H

Some fresh gas, the battery from my ZTR, a tiny shot of starting fluid, and a turn of the key    Been over 2 years since it ran!  Warmed it up, and took it for a ride in the woods.... Ran pretty well, but rough.... plan to do all maintenance between now and spring.  We're ready for some work now!

Excellent!  always great to keep a family heirloom going!! :D

a lot of folks avoid using starting fluid and just use carb cleaner

Thanks all.....Every time I'd help my grandfather with repairs an maintenance, he always told me I should keep his tractor when the time came.......  That was in '11, and I almost let my mother, who was executor of his estate, give it to my uncle because he needed a mower. I thought about it for a few days, and I couldn't let it go!

Glad I hung on to it..... he'd be happy to see it cared for and working at my house!

I also have his old ('74) Montgomery Ward  (Gilson) snowblower.... I got that from him a handful of years back, when he stopped using it.... It is an 8HP Briggs, 2 stage... Runs like a champ, and i use it hard every time it snows!

Anyways........I only use starting fluid if I really need it, and VERY minimally.....

Pics will be along soon...... Right now, space is at a premium in my garage, so it's tucked away in a corner, half under a shelf.......

It's real clean though... always well cared for.....311 hrs...... Tiller looks almost new, as it was always cleaned after use, and the tines were brushed with oil.  Mower deck is in good condition... in need of a cleaning..... The drawbar is brand new, in a box, and has never been on the Tractor!

I have an oil mess on the bottom of the transaxle.... looks like maybe an axle seal if i follow the trail... we'll see.

Otherwise, just a missing headlight trim and a dent under it from the one time my uncle used it.

Sounds like the tractor is exactly where your grandfather wanted it to be! Clean the carb and fix your wheel seal and you ought to be good for years to come.

You will remember your grandfather every time you go for a ride on the Horse!

Some more pics...

Tiller was used to till a garden approx 60' x 120', every year, for about 8-10 years.... IMO these pics show how taking care of your equipment helps it to last for many years.

Looks great and like it was well cared for.  At some point you may need to clean or replace the carburetor.  Also, feed it pure gas without ethanol if you can get it.

I'd feed all my small engines ethanol-free gas if I could get it.... looking online, nearest station with it is probably 70+ miles away.

I've had/have 3 horses. Always get the same grime around the rear/trans. Nice horse.

Wheel-N-It

Man, that is a beautiful Wheel Horse!!! I would love to have one just like that! FYI, the 416's were powered with two different engines. The older ones like mine had the K-341 single cylinder Kohler. Then came the M-16 single cylinder Kohler. Then the later like yours were Onan powered.
