518-H ignition, Onan 18

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

I've been having some trouble getting my 518-H, onan 18, started. I put in new plugs and with a spritz of carb cleaner, it ran.  Today, with a spritz of carb cleaner it fired, but would not stay running. I looked at the spark on the front plug and while I could see it, it did not apprear "hot" to me.  Tracing back, plug wires and coil next?  It turns over well enough.  Fairly new battery and i've been keeping the battery indoors this winter.  Any ideas? thank you, david

Sounds like a fuel supply problem, not electrical.   :scratchead:

Well, I started looking it over and following a vacumn line (?) from the air clearer toward the dash I saw a wire dangling.  I think it's the air cleaner sensor switch (?). I connected that wire and was able to get the tractor started. I let it run for 15 minutes and called it a day.  I still wonder if I need a new coil for more spark.

I ruled out the fuel as it seemed to flood before and there were fuel vapors coming out of the exhaust.

Thank you! dwc

Hi Folks,

Back with another question. I took my 518-H out in the woods to cut some firewood today.  The other day I got it running once I saw the wire on the air cleaner sensor was disconnected and plugged it back in. Today, I couldn't get it started until I sprayed a little carb cleaner in the carburetor. Then it fired and continued to run. I let it run while I cut wood for a half hour, figuring it needed to exercise a bit. I shut it off briefly back at the shed and then it started right up without any cab cleaner.

I replaced the spark plugs recently, but wonder if I'm in need of a new coil or plug wires.  All that stuff is probably original.

Any ideas?  Thanks for all your help. best, dwc

When was the last time the carburetor was cleaned.  As long as there is good spark, I am always amazed at how well an engine starts and runs after I clean its carburetor.

If you mean giving it a good spraying with carb cleaner, I did that last week. Cold engine, not running. Maybe I need to give it a more thorough spray?  I took the air cleaner apart and took off the air deflector plate so I could spray down in there. thanks, dwc

You keep asking about coil or wires, but you say you have to spray fuel into the carb. That says you have a fuel problem, or god forbid low compression. Make sure your choke is closing all the way before you start it next. If it is and still wont start without a drink you need to check fuel pump output.

Very good. I'll give it another try tomorrow.  I did check the line at the fuel pump last summer and it was pumping. How do I know if it's pumping fast enough?  Thanks, d

If it squirts while cranking, its enough

I'm pretty sure it's getting gas, as it seems to flood if I crank it very long. I can see vapor coming out of the exhaust.

But you say you have to give it a squirt. If that's the case it isn't flooded

Just to be clear the squirt is carb cleaner.  What's the vapor I see sometimes? thanks, d

But it starts when you squirt it doesn't it?

Yes, then continues to run. d

It does sound like a dirty carb.Spraying carb cleaner will not clean the internal parts of a carb.Without taking the carb apart I have had excellent results using Seafoam carb cleaner that you add to the gas.

You can get the directions on the can,but this is my method.I use about 2 oz per gal of gas.Run the engine about 5 min at various speeds.Let it sit for an hour or so and run it again at various speeds. I do this a few times then just run the rest of it as I normaly would.

This works for me and beats the crap out of taking the carb apart.

That sounds like a plan. I like to tinker, but I'm not interested in taking the carb apart and then having to pay for a fix!! Thanks for your help. best, dwc

If it starts with a squirt, then get away from electrical and concentrate on fuel like I mentioned above.

I,ve heard a lot a guys  complaining about the onans not working correctly and I,ve told a few guys this I,ve rebuilt about 12 520,s w onans and 9 times out a 10 the motor surges i tried sea foam  yes it worked for a few weeks then back to surgeing again , so im pretty good w electric so I started looking at the schematic,s almost every tractor was wired wrong at the gauges and some at other areas. I  corrected the problem by wireing it according to the schematic . now every tractor I got dosen,t surge . a lot of the gauges had  hot wires on ground terminals and ground wires on hot terminals . some dummys just put them any where they could shorting out the motor causing it to surge . trust me  check your wireing . it could be a fuel problem but check wireing  especially at gauges ,also a lot of gauges the nuts holding the wires to the terminals were just loose. good luck

Thanks for your views on this. One thing I found was a wire. Probably from taking the battery out to keep inside during cold weather, a wire came off the sensor that has the vacum line going to the air filter. Why it's all the way back in under the dash could be explained to me, but once I found that wire off and reconnected things worked much better! Go figure... Anyway, my tractor is blocked in by lots of snow right now, so I'll get back to it when it warms up a bit. Thank you very much, david

I have a few basic electrical system diagrams that are helpful in understanding how the wiring system works. They are not specific to any particular tractor and do not include safety switches. All use the 5 post ignition switches 103-991 for Magneto and 103-990 for Battery Ignition. I failed to include fuses in the Starter Generator drawing, this is an over-site and I would encourage fuses be used as shown in the other two drawings.
      Hope this is helpful.
Magneto Ignition system with electric start and solenoid.

Battery powered ignition system with points, condenser, solenoid and electric start.

Battery powered ignition with solenoid, points, condenser, Starter Generator and a mechanical voltage regulator.

We have uncovered a shortcoming in the factory  wiring diagrams for S/G battery ignition systems with a four terminal voltage regulator. The wire from the regulator "Gen" terminal to the S/G  "A" terminal was omitted. This drawing should clear that up.

I’m new to this and not sure if I’m doing this right, But I have a 211-4 with a Briggs 11hp and the thing was sold in my town years ago when it was new. it was my grandfathers till now so it’s a nice piece of history. and it has some electrical problems I can’t figure out, It blows the 15Amp fuse as soon as you turn the key, it all started after the I had to replace the the ignition switch. And now it just blows the fuse. I messed with it when it happened but I have been away in the service for about two years, but now I’m on leave and want to fix my pride and joy but don’t know if my wires are all in the right spot. And my brother actually hooked the battery up backwards by accident for a few seconds while I was away so don’t know if that did anything. So any helpful suggestions or pictures for an example to look at. Thanks

I have been into garden tractors for a few years.  Wanted to learn about small engines and buying an old sear suburban was cheaper than the class at the local community college.  Just got a 1980 C85 (with a johnny bucket on it).

Quick story and a couple of questions concerning replacing the ignition coil on my '89 416-8 with Onan P216 engine.

So I got this old tractor from my Dad when he replaced it and it was running okay until a few weeks ago. Was picking up sticks and hauling them out to the wood pile when I idled down the tractor and then it stalled out (which happens all the time.) I tried starting again and it would not turn over. The starter would go and go but no ignition. I spent a lot of time on these forums and found some really good info including the service manual. I used that diagnose the problem and figured out the coil was bad. I ordered a new off brand coil and condenser from Amazon for $40 swapped them in last night and it fired almost immediately. Plus since I had taken the shroud off and disconnected the throttle cable it was idling well at very low throttle. I've still got to reassemble everything properly but it seems like the coil was the culprit.
That said I've got a couple questions.

      1. Anybody have any luck with non-Onan coils? The one I got from Amazon seems well made but it is literally some no name part. I figured for $40 it was worth a shot.

      2. Does it matter which spark plug attaches to which plug on the coil? I forgot to take a photo before I disassembled.

      3. Could a failing coil cause very hard starts and stalling at low idle? I'm asking because as I said above the tractor has been very hard to start for years. Almost always needed to choke it. It would also stall out if you idled down nearly every time. Just the brief testing with the new coil that I've done, both of these issues seem much better. Also I used my Dad's replacement (early '90s 416-h with same engine) for this tractor while working on mine and it started and idled very easily. It looks like it might have a replacement coil as well. Just wondering.

      Thanks all.

The stator and flywheel on this engine are different than others I have worked on so far. The stator is smaller in diameter and has a wire that runs out to a part that looks like an ignition coil but has no plug wire. I am wondering what it is and how do I wire it?

I'm not 100% positive that I put it back in the same spot it came but I think I did. I gapped it at .020" from the bump that sticks out on the flywheel, it is magnetized.
