857 horse 2,581 #1 Posted January 30, 2014 i know the puriest will balk at this,,,i found a 401 at the dump.... My very first Wheel Horse,,Before knowing anything,I thought it was a minature tractor...i took it home in the shed...5 years later...i came across a 416 8 speed..no engine.... trying to be creative,,,i adapted the 8 speed to the 401,,,nothing welded...with no engine... i had a 2 1/2 hp briggs..restored.... it is almost complete...maybe this weekend.......what started my W/H habit was a visit..to ebay 2 years ago...i found a new hood.. 3 - 857"s 1 401 1-701 i was hoping to hear from others that made this 8 speed suburban....i will log pictures when the wheel are on 2 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #3 Posted January 30, 2014 Putting a 6 or 8 speed in a mid-engine tractor has been done more than a few times - but the ones I know of were 551 models that already had the two-piece 3 speed Uni-Drive. 857 horse 2,581 #5 Posted January 30, 2014 i cut a square plate to fit the transmission,,,,added 2 pieces of angle that slid inside the back of the 401 frame...used the 3 holes on each side of the frame where the old 3 piece trans fit,,to attach the adapter,,, it almost looks original W/H.......the last issue to address is the brake and cross shaft...im hoping a day in the garage fixes that....then disasembly pics..posts paint.. atleast...thats the plan.......thanks for your comments 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
