Ryanflathead45 11 #1 Posted January 24, 2014 We have a charger 12 automatic that we quite using a few years ago because the hydro trans would not work when it got warm. It was just parked because we bought a GT-14 to take its place. So since its just sitting there I'm day dreaming about turning it into a pulling tractor lol. What would be involved to swapping and 8 speed into this tractor? Is it even possible?
Kelly 1,029 #2 Posted January 24, 2014 Yes it's do able, but with all the little stuff you will need it would be best to have a donor tractor setting there, and at that point is the donor you pick up worth just doing a engine swap ?? not sure where in IN you are but I have roller 8 speeds in lower MI for sale
daveoman1966 3,762 #3 Posted January 24, 2014 If you have 'tool skills', it isn't difficult to rebuild the pump on the charger 12. It should be Sundstrand (Hydrogear) model 90-2062 and it is likely that the brass parts in it just need to be resurfaced. There is one other part that would probably need precision ground, but any machine shop could do that in just a few minuites. Here are a few pics of the 90-2062 pump that I rebuilt last year.. You would also PROBABLY want to remove and clean all of the little pressure vavles and such, but, again, that is not a difficult undertaking. my email is: daveoman@windstream.net should you want to contact me off-forum. Ryanflathead45 11 #4 Posted January 26, 2014 Thanks for the input guys. Kelly, I think your probably 100% correct. I forgot about all the little parts for the clutch and such. Dave, I did not know that they were rebuildable. I might have to contact you if I take it apart someday. Too many other more important to finish first. Kelly 1,029 #5 Posted January 26, 2014 Not just little parts belt guards, some times the whole dash tower will need to be swapped, it's best to have a roller there to work with.
