Sarge 3,463 #1 Posted January 21, 2014 Ok , this is enough . The old 1277 workhorse I use far too often has finally wore out the engine/trans drive pulley . My parts guru says it NLA and there are no cross references for a new one . The whole problem seems to stem from having to use A cut belts instead of the OEM HA cut belt since no one makes them anymore . I have talked to a Q-Power rep who said they can actually cut an HA belt but it would take a minimum order and not sure what all that entails . So , several options here - Later today I'll test the metal of the original and see if it's indeed cast iron or cast steel . If it's cast steel it's going to get tig welded and re-turned in the lathe to use a common power-rated A belt . If it's cast iron , well that's certainly out as bronze brazing just isn't a decent solution for a wear surface . Option 2 is to use a brand-new 8HP pulley I have that uses the 1" bore . I can bore it out and even modify the keyway to use the original key . Not interested in trying to use a cut or modified key as that's asking for crank issues and the ol' girl doesn't deserve that . BUT , that puts it back to the original source of the issue - no available HA 1/2"x78" belts available . The OEM belt would last several years easily , but using an A belt results in less than 20 service hours at best and not being able to use the hydro to full power . This is really past frustrating . I'm actually considering buying a Berco blower and putting on the junk JD LA160 mower I got from Dad's estate . Doubt that tractor will last long using it for this task , but who knows . Open to any ideas , folks....? Sarge
AMC RULES 37,125 #2 Posted January 21, 2014 Place a "wanted" add for the part you need here in the classified section. Ebay search...wheel horse 1277... if the part isn't there now...save the search, be patient, check back later. Good luck to you, and your project.
Sarge 3,463 #3 Posted January 21, 2014 I've bought two used pulleys off Fleabay , both are worn worse than the one I have - tough to find a good used part for something this old . Need to get busy with the weld test , maybe I'll get lucky with the tig and ER80SD2 tool steel filler rod . Sarge
Martin 2,131 #4 Posted January 21, 2014 (edited) Pulleys are around, like Craig said post a wanted ad. Belts come up for sale every now and again, nos, just need to be on the look out, part number 6489 superseded to 7927. I think that's right...... daveoman1966 3,745 #5 Posted January 21, 2014 What are the dimensions of the pulley you need for the 1277? I may be able to help as I have many Wheelhorse engine and Trans drive pulleys to select from. my email is: daveoman@windstream.net to contact me directly. Sarge 3,463 #7 Posted January 28, 2014 Ok , first - these pulleys are not cast iron - they are indeed cast steel as I thought , so highly weldable . Used 308L filler rod to build up the badly worn area and re-cut the angle on the lathe . http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr159/morepowr/1277pulleyweld.jpg http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr159/morepowr/1277pulleyweld2.jpg http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr159/morepowr/1277pulleyweld3.jpg Last photo shows the angle these are cut stock - 35* which is a bit odd . Anyhow , tractor has way more hydro power now and belt is tracking great - we'll see how well it lasts . http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr159/morepowr/treesmile.jpg Sarge
sorekiwi 761 #8 Posted January 28, 2014 Interesting post Sarge. I cant say that I have ever looked that closely at the grooves on the pulleys on my 1276, I will when that tractor gets unburied from the back of the shed. I guess I never heard about the problems of running A belts instead of HA belts before. What is the issue? Both are supposedly a 40 degree angle on the section, and it seems that the dimensions are the same. Interesting that the stock angle on the pulley is 35 degrees, I wonder if they did that to allow for some wear?
Sarge 3,463 #9 Posted February 4, 2014 I believe the pulley angle is directly intended to help with de-clutching the hyrdo when in park , otherwise it would create excessive wear in the belt . There are subtle differences in belts , HA cut belts have a slightly different profile making them wedge into the pulley differently . In my opinion , the wear on the pulley is not just from age - it's from using A belts over the years or at least that has to be a contributor . I had an hour long talk with one of the techs from Q-Power over all this - he said they can actually make an HA cut belt with no cover so that is an option although I'd bet it won't be cheap . For now , no belt wear showing and the pulley still looks new . Sarge
