transmission question

Hello all. New to the forum. I have a 1981 GT 2500. The high-low shift fork in the transmission broke. It's the 5086 transmission. I know that I can get the part, but I have something else in mind. I want to know if the transmission off of a c85 Wheel Horse will work on my gt2500. The c85 transmission number is 103916. what are the differences between these two transmissions? Any help is greatly appreciated. Scott

Its a straight swap. The C-85 has the "Heavier duty" tranny. It'll have 1 1/8" axles with 8 pinions whereas your GT-2500 has the 1" axles and 4 pinions. So all the differences are inside the units.

Thanks Sparky. So, here is my situation. My gt2500 has got a b&s engine. It also has a snow blade i use in the winter. Snow blade is good. Engine not so good. Hard to start.I use a whole can of starting fluid and battery jumper every time just to get it started.

Should i buy the c85 for $350 and use its engine and rear end for my gt2500?

It's interesting that the C-85 would have the heavier tranny with 1-1/8" axles and an 8 pinion tranny.  I had a C-111 one time and I think they were the same too - yet later models, like some 312-8 tractors, even with more hp had 1 inch axles and 4 pinion trannys.

IMHO - if you buy the C-85, I'd use it as it and part with the GT2500.  No mods required, no moving parts from one tractor to the next.  I would also think the electrical would be different between the two tractors.  With the C-85's stronger tranny, i think it would be no problem bolting in another engine down the road - but everything you have, i.e. implements, for the GT2500 should fit the C-85.

I agree, if the C-85 is a running machine then run it. Save the GT-2500 as the parts machine or a re-build project for down the road.

Sound advice. Thanks guys. I did go a totally different route than i set out for; I bought a hydrostatic. The price was great. Thanks for the advice from everybody!

Yes, leeave96,i thought the gt would have the bigger axles also. Thats why i was thinking i should put everything on the gt. Was thinking it would be heavier duty& it sure looks like it sits higher. Less frame drag in deeper snow? Even though i bought the cub, i still like the wheelhorse. Having it for 8 years, really good solid tractor & i love the snow blade tilt control being mounted on the handle. Loved the low range gears too!
