WH newbie questions

Recommended Posts

dagwoodz

I have a cub cadet and a Bollens with a cub rear end. I pull both in the 1050 stock class. I want to move up to what we call limited sport stock. Rules are open for chassis and sheet metal. Engines are stock bore and stroke 12 hp. Unlimited rpm with a stock Kohler carb and stock ignition. 23 inch tires. Everybody I know are building Cubs. I pull a Bolens cause I like to be different. I want to build something different for sport stock. Not just a reskinned cub. My questions are...

I know the 8 pinion WH rears will hold the HP. What about the RPM?

Are the gear ratios close enough for various track conditions?

Or will I have to change pullies?

Clutch?

Any insight will be appreciated.

For what your looking at a class a WH 8 pinion will be fine. Gearing would be pulley swaps or variable pitch pully on the engine and a change of the rear pulley. I just hope you have a steel flywheel on the engine

How "hot" is the Kohler in the photo? What gear do you use? I will use a billet rod and steel flywheel.

NQS super stock around 50hp unlimited rpm. My "stock" twin is almost that runs in a @4500rpm class  Neather runs less than 3rd high with upping the pullies. The twin will do 18- 20 pulling a 7000lb sled

I have a C-125 with a good running K301 and (98% sure) an 8 pinion rear. There is some body rust, but if you are looking for a puller that you will be modifying its a great starting point.

Send me a PM if interested.

Got a line on a c-81. It has 1.25 axles. Going to jack it up and turn the tires to check if its an 8 or 10 pinion. The guy wants a cub I have in pieces in trade. Where are you located if it does not work out?

Cincinnati, OH. Yea mine is 1 1/8" axles as well.

I would be willing to part the engine separately if you need a 12 horse to build. It doesn't smoke at all and runs great (been using it to plow this winter). The carb throttle bushing needs to be replaced though. If you are building it for a puller though you will likely be replacing all those things anyways.

I got the c-81 today. According to toro parts viewer the 1978 is a 4 pinion. The 1979 is an 8 pinion. Mine has 1 1/8 axles and is a 1979. Does anyone have a photo of how the big Kohlers mount to the frame. My frame had an 8 horse in a cradle. I have a 12 with the large oil pan. WH are new to me so any help is appreciated.

Chris. Your puller is my inspiration. I have to use the stock frame rails so i am going to build a spacer to go between the frame and trans. Stock wheelbase is 46 inches. My rules allow me to go to 52 inches. I am going to add a 5 inch spacer and build new clutch and brake linkage. Your input is greatly appreciated. Please check back here often for progress. Should I start a new post over in the construction/restoration forum or just keep updating here?

A C 195 has a wheel base of 52.5 inches, GT14 is a little shorter I think around 51 Just sayin...............

You can extend your wheel base also by mounting the axle to the front of the frame I beleive that brings it to 50 been awhile.

Did you have to extend the steering? Or are the tie rods long enough?

You'll need longer tie rods, they'll angle back some. Also double up the front mount to take the stress of a full drop when weighted

Check your rules  that blue one wouldn't be legal here to pull. It would have to be setup to keep you foot from hitting the front of the tire
