all the teeth are gone on the starter. not sure if Briggs tend to eat starters or what.

I think I typed Horse instead of Wheel horse or wheelhorse and there it was.

They're a great tractor Don. I had to replace the starter gear on mine along with the coil at one point.  It would run but cut out once the coil got hot.  Let it cool down and it would start right up but die as soon as it got hot again.  I still kick myself for selling my GT 1848.  You'll also love the hydro lift.

Great deal Don. Those wide rear rims are worth more than you paid for the whole thing! That rear end is supposed to have slightly different gearing making it a bit faster than the regular hydro Wheel Horse. I sold a rear like that to Craig (AMC) for a replacement in his 520, not sure if he installed it yet and if he did was the increase in speed noticeable.

a quick update:

so as with all things, the proof is with the pudding.  The PO stated that he had the starter go out and then just parked it last year.  after cleaning the engine, changing fuel lines etc  and then check out the starter.  Briggs decides to have  a plastic/nylon gear on the starter(Why?) and it looks like Stevasaurus at the end of the Big Show, but I digress, so buy a rebuild kit (thanks EricJ) and attach it up and engine runs on carb cleaner only, then the gear shreds. Hmmmm.  starter alignment looks good, flywheel is fine.  a buddy has another starter and all is good.  more on Mr Briggs starter woes later.  So break into the fuel pump/carb issue (tiny fuel pump springs that I used tweezers to place back into the pump...Mr Briggs needs a talking to from Mr Stratton.  still nothing and no fuel getting up there.  EricJ reminds me that sometimes you have to give the old girl a big smooch!  So after blowing into the gas tank (glad no one was watching) she fires up and roars (at least as a Briggs version of a roar) and take her out in the pouring rain wearing my old flight suit and the neighbors probally are still shaking their heads.  The speed of the this faster Eaton 1100 compared to my 88 520 is noted.  back and forth in the rain to try to get the tranny warm and she is strong until..... a spray of tranny oil up from the shifter plate dampens the day and I retreat back to the garage.  But first, I have to put Dawn, HF part cleaner(it's Biodegrade) car wash down on the driveway and hose and squegee it down...again the neighbors wonder why I'm out there in the rain washing my driveway in a sodden old flight suit.  that was my Sunday.   I was lovin every minute of it since the wife never saw it!  Shhhh! :D

That is a nice looking horse Don.  It's possible that the starter gear is nylon for a reason.  They may have had an issue and that is where they wanted it to break.  It is a cheap and easy fix.  :)

Like Dino said about the starter gear, most briggs have the plastic gear, not sure why :eusa-think:

But still nice tractor & story  :handgestures-thumbupright:

personally I don't have anything against the plastic gear. mine stripped out recently and it was replaced $2 later. id much rather have the wear on the replaceable gear than the flywheel. if you have the starter set up correctly they should last a long time......

The ring gear on the fly wheel is die-cast. so a plastic gear was used to keep it from being chewed up by the bendix gear.

so here is the damage.  the hydro hose from the tranny to the control valve has sprung a major gushing leak.  it looks like the hose got wedged between the tranny cooling fin :D s and the frame body over the years it must have worn through.I couldnt see anything until I filled the Eaton back up with oil, put cardboard down all over and put the back end on jackstands.  Sure enough, she started gushing oil all over the motion control, parking brake area.  I didnt get to pulling the hose off as it was New Years eve and it was getting dark and snow might be on it's way.  reading up on the hydro line replacment on past threads!

well that sucks....

always a possibility with these tractors if they have worn lines. thanks for reminding us Don that we are sometimes only a moment away from getting covered in trans oil........
