953 transmission replacement

Gents, I located a 953 tractor, according to the current owner the transmission needs replacement. I like the tractor and am considering it. Question being, chances of finding a replacement and approximate cost of it.

The dollar amounts have to jive to make the tractor purchase worth while.

 

Thanks for anything that can be told to help me in my decision.

The chart tells me you prob are looking at a '63 4 speed trans (5045). Several vendors and repairmen might still have some for sale. The one I'm thinking of may have gotten rid of all but is still listed in vendor section at bottom of main page. If you have some idea from PO what malfunction stevasaurus Steve can give you some ideas on what you could look for if you feel comfortable teraing it down. He prob has parts and if not another member racinfool40, Mike the 8 speed guy also has some 4 speed parts.

At any rate you could put an (WANTED) add (area below on main page) and will prob find one. I'd shoot a guess at from $100 to $175 for a known good one and maybe less (those are kinda ebay prices I remember). On 953 with transmission dead, all rest  good (tires, sheet metal, engine), if it's a $75 to $125 asking price, overall cosemetic++ or rust bucket is where to figure.

 

I'm a new member so get several advisers and if you're in WH country there're a lot avail. Great huntin to ya!

The 953 and 1054 tractors use a unique transmission.  The axles in particular are longer than the "normal" Wheel Horse transmission. and the mounting bolt pattern is also different.

 

Best bet would be to repair the trans that is in it.  These models used a spider gear differential which works really well, but is relatively weak.  An 8 pinion diff can be fitted with a few mods, and I think this is the way to go.

as everyone stated..there are parts out there to repair the trans...I have plenty here and I do have 1 bevel gear differential here also...If you do pick it up there is plenty of guys here willing to get you back and runnning.

gentleman, thank you for the replies so far. I should have posted the the tractor is a 953.

the body looks pretty good, in pics anyway, has a 48 inch deck and a plow. also the seat is not stock. if any of these items need to be considered, thanks again.

as a footnote, not 100 percent for sure, might be able to grab it for $200.

That 953 would be in my shop in a heart beat. You can work the tranny part out.

Yep, go buy it and we will see what is up with the trans.  It is the bevel gear differential, and Mike has the parts (if needed).  I would go for fixing the trans that is in it.  That will be cheaper then finding another one, and you will know you have a good trans then.  :) Depending on what is wrong...the cost could range from new seals ($10 - $15) to maybe around $100  if some bearings and parts.

Update update. The gent with the tractor wrote me back. He said he located parts in Pa. About 300 bucks. He said he has the rear end off ??? Friday he is going out to where the plow is stored and send me pics of it. When I figure how to get the 3 pics he sent me I will post them here for you guys to see. Imho the body looks solid and straight. It's still on my hit list. Right now in the garage tinkering on the r16. I also have to . Soon. Start breaking down the 854 for some new lipstick. Lol mechanical that baby is rock solid she's just old. But I am older. What the heck I love working on 3 things at once.

Anyway I will write this gent back and ask him more detail on the trans.

And thanks a bunch guys for answers so far. Much appreciated.

I would say yes...if the engine is good.  Good tires, sheet metal, guards.  $300 is the high end, but it is a good horse and looks like it is in very good shape.  :eusa-think:

Sorry I did not get back sooner, been very busy. Below is the list of parts needed.

2820   Axle Gear  2 each   50.00 each

2819   Differential Pinion gear  2 each  75.00 each

2826   Differential Block  1 each  50.00

933217   Roll Pin  2 each  .25 each

1526   Axle Needle Bearing  1 each  22.79

1213    Axle Oil Seal  2 each  6.00 each

3912   Case Gasket  1 each  4.48

3573   Shift Pin Stop  1 each  2.76

3517   Ball Stop  1each  .30

 

This list is what I saw I would replace.  Basicly I think the Axle Needle bearing went bad which resulted in the axle gears and

Those gear prices seem a little high...where did you get those prices?? :eusa-think:   Those axle bearing prices seem steep also...maybe around $6 to $8 apiece.  I'd check with racinfool40 (Mike) for prices on those gears. :)
