benjiboo 174 #1 Posted December 4, 2013 Hey guys. When I first got my C-160 it didn't have a battery in it. So I bought a typical run of the mill garden variety lawn tractor battery from WallyWorld to go in it. The battery fits pretty loose inside the battery box and I was wondering...what do you guys use or what have you guys fabbed up to keep the battery from rattling and bouncing around while in operation? Do you just shim it up on the sides and ends with pieces of ply-wood? What are you guys running for this? Anyone got any pics of their own fantastic solutions? Thanks!
rmaynard 15,723 #2 Posted December 4, 2013 (edited) My B-100's and C-120 use the same box as what is supposed to be on your C-160. My batteries fit fine. Do you have the correct box? If not, try to find the right one, then your standard battery should fit. Edited December 4, 2013 by rmaynard
Martin 2,133 #3 Posted December 4, 2013 if I'm staying close to how the tractor was originally, i make sure i have the correct size battery box or tray, then i purchase a battery as close to oem size as possible. i have shimmed or packed a gap on a makeshift battery replacement in the past, but its so much nicer to get the correct size battery...... If not, try to find the right one, then your standard battery should fit. I'm pretty sure the battery tray is correct, but there isn't really a 'box' persay that the battery sits in, just the tray. It is bolted to the frame and has a strap on the left hand side (clutch side) and has two nuts that screw onto the studs on the tray. The battery I bought was the only one they had that was for lawn mowers. Maybe I just need a bigger battery?

I agree, it would be alot nicer if the battery fit right. for the time being I just have a couple pieces of 1/2" ply-wood cut to shim it up so the battery doesn't 'rock-n-roll' while it's running but I really don't like it being 'rigged up' like that. Lol.
rmaynard 15,723 #6 Posted December 4, 2013 Most tractor batteries are designated U1. The U1's that I buy from Battery Warehouse are 8.25" long x 5-3/16" wide You could always get a set of clamps similar to the ones pictured below to hold it down.
dbartlett1958 96 #7 Posted December 4, 2013 I just did something like this on my brother in law's JD 112. What I uses was a length of 1/4' threaded rod, cut long enough to be taller than the battery. I drilled through the battery tray on either side of the battery and put lock-nuts and washers above and below the tray. Then I cut a piece of flat stock, insulated with rubber hose and drilled holes to fit down over the threaded rod, tighten down with wing-nuts and washers. If I still had the tractor here I would post a picture.
varosd 1,185 #8 Posted December 4, 2013 drilled tiny hole on the ends of box and stretched a micro bungee cord across top of battery. never shifts around now!
pfrederi 17,970 #9 Posted December 4, 2013 Older WHs used regular car batteries (group 75 or 22 I believe) hence the bigger battery tray on older units. Measure your tray then look at this table to see what is the best fit (don't forget to consider the height) http://www.rtpnet.org/teaa/bcigroup.html
SousaKerry 502 #10 Posted December 4, 2013 Couple scraps of wood has always worked well for me. Heck the higher end Lawn Mower Batteries have more CCA then the orriginal larger batteries did and they cost about 1/3 as much
benjiboo 174 #11 Posted December 5, 2013 I really don't want to do any drilling cutting or welding to the original tray. I was hopeing maybe I could find or someone else would know where to find something like a plastic battery box that would fit in the tray and hold the battery pretty securely. Kind of like the battery boxes you would put a trolling motor battery in for your boat but sized to fit a U1 sized battery. I'll have to look around and see what I can find. Or get a bigger battery I suppose.
woodchuckfarmer 333 #12 Posted December 7, 2013 The older snowmobiles used to have a battery box, it came with a start kit......hope this helps
Martin 2,133 #13 Posted December 8, 2013 (edited) need to check the dimensions on my c160 to see if they are the same, but the battery box on my 1057 uses a group 26 car size battery...... i wrote these battery specs/dimensions in my 1057 build thread, fairly sure they are correct...... Battery CA @ 32 Degrees F : 560 Battery CCA @ 0 Degrees F : 450 Battery Reserve Capacity : 55i think it was 8.5" l x 6.25"w x 7" h... and here it is after some more 'friendlier' decals........ pacer 3,174 #14 Posted December 8, 2013 Yes, the D-160 and D-180 take the larger car type battery Martin shows - I imagine the conventional lawn tractor type battery is a bit lost in the tray!

Apparently my C-160 takes a larger battery too because the regular sized lawn mower battery has plenty of room to shake rattle and roll around. Lol.
wrightorchid 261 #16 Posted December 11, 2013 looks very nice. where did you get the Delco label? Must be nice to use a car battery, the 312 has a much smaller one. The terminal posts look pretty nice also.
Martin 2,133 #17 Posted December 11, 2013 Delco decal from Terry (vinylguy). He has a website redoyourhorse.com. Go there and search delco or battery and I'm sure you will find it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
