clipflip 10 #1 Posted November 28, 2013 I decided to go for it and pick her up! I think at $180 it was a steal! It runs perfectly and starts right up! BUT, it smokes pretty bad. The cylinder is in good shape, no scoring. I need to hone it out to .10 over and it needs a new piston and rings. Im not even going to touch the carb cause its perfect. PS... HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!! Sparky-(Admin) 21,294 #5 Posted November 28, 2013 Have you checked the oil? Maybe its got some real thin oil in it. I would warm it up, drop the oil and re-fill with some straight 30w. It might still smoke but maybe not as bad. Mike........
clipflip 10 #6 Posted November 28, 2013 Yeah, its kind of thin... But i took the head off and cranked it, oil just flows into the upper cylinder. Probably a spoonfull every 30-45 seconds. Its pretty bad.

clipflip 10 #8 Posted November 28, 2013 I was wondering... Is it possible to put a 1"bigger pulley on the engine just to get a bit more speed? it feels like these are very slow in 3rd compared to a cub...
oldblue1993 98 #9 Posted November 28, 2013 I think somewhere on here someone did that, I have never looked into it because it would take away some power and although the 8 is a strong engine it is still just an 8. Personally I would leave it,its a great combination as it stands." slow n steady wins the race"

Sparky-(Admin) 21,294 #11 Posted November 28, 2013 Front should be 4"....not sure on the rear pulley. Mike......
clipflip 10 #12 Posted November 28, 2013 Front should be 4"....not sure on the rear pulley. Mike...... What rpm does the engone spin at full throttle? 3200?
clipflip 10 #13 Posted November 28, 2013 Well the rear pulley is 6 inches, the front is 4 and if the engine is at 3200 rpm... Rear pulley speed is 2133 rpm if the front pulley is 5 inches rear pulley speed is 2666 rpm. SO... 2133 rpm/5mph=2666rpm/ ?mph = 6.2 mph This shouldnt cause loss of power at all! and 1mph gain! oldblue1993 98 #14 Posted November 28, 2013 I see your point, I guess it all depends on its use also, I have one with the 4 speed and even in first "snowblowing" its to fast. The other I have has the 8 speed and seems to go slow and fast enough. Let us know what you end up doing and how it works.
Martin 2,131 #15 Posted November 28, 2013 (edited) I was wondering... Is it possible to put a 1"bigger pulley on the engine just to get a bit more speed? it feels like these are very slow in 3rd compared to a cub... i did it with a c125 of mine. put a hydro front pulley on the engine in place of the 8 speed one. the larger k301 has a 1 1/8 shaft though and since you would have a 1" on the k181 you would need to find another way. while it does increase the ground speed considerably, i don't think i would do it with an 8 hp engine. the k301 has more torque and makes it easy to get moving with that gearing. not sure what cub you are referring to, but i couldn't gear my c125 any where near enough to have the same ground speed as my cub cadet 682. the gearing on the cub is much taller and therefore faster. i think most wheel horses around the same vintage and size as yours (except for those models with the eaton 1100 with the taller gearing) had basically the same ground speed...... oldblue1993 98 #16 Posted November 28, 2013 Yea I just got to fix my previous saying about that 8 speed being faster, I have larger tires on the rear and if the 2 were same size I think they would be same speed. Just wanted to say that before people think I am losing it.
