bean 85 #1 Posted October 28, 2013 (edited) decided to flush the trans on the '73 8hp I just bought. it was a little hard to shift at times. the boot fit decently, so I figured it wouldn't have too much water in it. it did have some water mixed in with the gear lube. looked like hot fudge when I drained it. I filled it with kerosene and drove it around for a few minutes, then drained. looked like coffee. I went to fill it and it will only hold 1 qt of 90w . the manual says 3pts. it is 1/4- 1/2" below the top of the filler opening. should I fill it to flush/overrunning? btw, it shifts great and is easier to push around the garage Edited October 28, 2013 by bean
boovuc 1,090 #2 Posted October 28, 2013 Sounds like it didn't all drain. Is it cold where your at? Did you get the transmission warmed up well before draining? I have aimed an infrared heater at the rear end of mine to get the metal warmed up and I always have the gear oil bottles in the house before I change out a rear end. You will never get all of it out but you should have gotten more than you did.
sorekiwi 761 #3 Posted October 29, 2013 Also when draining the trans, lift the front of the tractor as high as you can. There is a boss around the middle bolt that traps oil in the front part of the transmission. Raising the front of the tractor will empty a lot of that oil into the section with the drain plug. This is a hydro, but the pic shows the boss that acts as a dam to the front part of the case draining.
Coadster32 793 #4 Posted October 29, 2013 Great visual Mike! For those that haven't had one apart, it really shows what you said...raise it up as high as you can.

I will see what the oil looks like after I drive it around a little more I am swapping in an 8spd this winter, so I will probably top it off and let it sit.
