Am I seeing what I think I'm seeing, it seems the flywheel air is used to act as a sort of forced induction Into the air intake?

Seems like a good idea to produce more power, hmm I might try to replicate the that

that is how the intake is designed from the factory. the carb gets its air supply through the blower housing, if all the seals on the air cleaner are there and the intake tube is in place the only way the engine should get air is through that tube......

little by little its getting there, now summer is here, hard to get time to work on it.

finally got the drive belt 93-9809 (superseded the original belt number)

also got the pto sorted after much frustration.......

still need to purchase the locking pin for the pto but i found an original that i straightened for the time being.

more small parts on this morning. this is the best part of the build in my opinion. these newer tractors don't have the 'discoveries' to be found when taking them apart that the older 50s and 60s tractors do for me (other than butchering and back yard engineering.....), so the fun with the newer ones for me is putting all the finishing touches on them. i built this one as maybe Toro would have done if i was running the factory, used almost all oem parts, but assembly and colors, plating etc just a little different in some areas. i still wanted all the small stuff to be 'right', stuff like clips, etc and proper grips on the levers etc. since most of this stuff was rusty or the grips damaged or torn, i had to get new. heres some more small stuff going on the tractor. getting close now to firing that engine up for the first time since its new set of clothes......

clips used for the rest of wiring harness and to hold the gas line at the seat pan support are all clip 8830. i used quite a few of these for holding wiring in other locations as well as the normal factory locations.....

I am so jealous of your skill, attention to detail and your having access to the powder coating machine. I know you said you were going to use it but it belongs under glass in a museum. I don't think I would have the nerve to even sit in the seat.

hooked up the battery to check out all the electrical. its amazing how everything just 'works' with good wiring and clean new connections. i still need to paint the lower dash plate and shifter plate, but for the electrical test i just installed some gauges and the switches and hooked the wiring to the back of them.

the hour meter i cleaned up and will be kept as its original to the tractor and has the correct hours on it, the volt meter is not as nice as i would like and will probably get replaced. Switches were cleaned up and tested earlier.....

Terry has already got my decals as close as humanly possible to match the oem ones here.....

i think i need to come up with some sort of decal for the battery too, looks a little bare with all the standard decals ripped off. still need to get the air cleaner lid rechromed....

tested out the warning lights, oil blinked like it should too....

i was lucky both the rolling 416s came with good indicator boards with all lights working.

Thanks for all the nice comments guys.

Denny, the shop has been a work in progress the last month or so, I can now get my truck in there again. When I want to work on the tractor I just move it into the space where the truck is parked. Not perfect, can't work on them when the truck is in there, but can't have everything. I'm just happy I can pull the truck in there when we've been getting these storms of late. It's not fun watching golf ball size hail bouncing off it from the window!!!

Thanks for your comment on the 416 too Denny, that means a lot having seen the quality of your work in person...Everything has just come together well on this one, the powder is still sometimes luck of the draw, seeing the industrial nature of the place I paint in, but the paint on this one is by far the best yet.....

tidied up some more things today, its at the stage where i could throw gas in the tank and fire it up, but not so fast. i want to go over everything and check bolts etc. i always find something i missed tightening, either got interrupted or left for another part to go on first. So that will get taken care of next.

but today i got a fuel filter on, oil drain for the engine was installed, 2 qts of GL-5 gear oil in the unidrive and 1.75 qts 10W30 Rotella T5 synthetic blend in the engine, tidied up some carb stuff that needed doing including choke cable install, initial adjustments on the mixture and finishing off the throttle linkage. the fuel line was re routed a bit because of the filter install. 

 

was having so much fun the only pic i took early on was this one of the oil drain parts.. even the galvanized stuff can look good with a little polish. :)

then i tackled the lower dash plate and shifter plate. these were powder coated yesterday at work and today i applied some of the decals Terry has already done for me. i had a voltmeter that i got some time ago, so i used that instead of the oem one that was hard to get looking good, had dust inside the lens and i also noticed it wasn't reading voltage correctly when i hooked it up the other day. installed the original to this tractor hour meter with 585 hours on it and the light and ignition switches.

the shifter plate got a new microswitch for the parking brake light and some decals. still need the large warning decal and the shifter decal will be changed for a more accurate size 1995 one.

I'm going to warn you all now, this aint pretty, i wasn't going to put this video up because its not running perfect, but what fun would that be?

 

i pulled the air cleaner and messed with the governor and mixtures and it runs better now, but it has a slight surge up high, go figure, the Onan curse......

 

i took a peek in the carb bowl, thought maybe some junk worked its way through from somewhere, but clean as a whistle. its getting better and I'm going to ignore it for a while as every time i start it up its getting better......

Jack and Ed, it seems to be coming out of it. you know it just doesn't matter how much you go through these things, there is always something. to be honest though, I've wondered if the carb was going to give me problems or something else.

overall I'm really happy though. time will tell.......
