Martin 2,131 #280 Posted March 26, 2014 more progress.... clutch, brake pedals and linkages on and got the brake band lining stuck in the brake band....... heres how i did the brake band....... brake band ready to have lining glued on. it was previously blasted and yellow zinc plated. lining purchased through mcmaster carr, http://www.mcmaster.com/#6175k813/=r94hwf the lining needs to have two holes put in one end to clearance the rivet heads in the band... hole positions marked. the lining was easy enough to drill with a drill bit so thats how i made the holes. i picked a drill size just slightly larger than the heads of the rivets. holes look positioned ok around rivet heads..... then i needed to cut the lining to length, i marked the side of the band where the old lining ended and then marked the new lining the same. squared of mark and cut to length. the lining cut easy with a large sharp pair of scissors.... i used the brake drum as a mandrel to clamp the lining tight to the band. i smeared black silicone on the lining and using a battery clamp bolt and spacer, drew the band together tight around the drum. the band and lining needed a couple bar clamps as well to keep pressure all the way around. i will leave it for a good 24 hours and see how it worked out. i haven't done one of these before but heard others on here use silicone to glue the lining. i guess i will find out how well it sticks..... 6 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I was thinking of also going with brass rivets as they will wear with the band but you should have good luck with it I did mime out in the cold so it might not of dried. Like you, I've heard other talking about using black RTV for the brake lining, but that seems somewhat light duty to me, although I'm probably wrong! If it were me, I think I would use 3M black super weatherstrip adhesive. When I really want to make something stick, thats what I use. As always Martin, AMAZING Work!!!! Your work would make the folks at the Barrett Jackson Auction proud... On the brake band friction material I would try windshield urethane (used to glue in late model auto windshields). It is made to with stand the impact of air bag explosions and keep the glass held firmly in place. **** My first (Late 80's) wheel horse find back in 2007 went to my wife's aunt where it has been providing flawless service ever since. I've been so worn out at the end of every day, no energy or motivation to stay back at work, the painting of parts has sort of been put on hold. hopefully that should change now..... doing a big run of Kinze parts today and tomorrow.... Martin 2,131 #296 Posted April 15, 2014 (edited) no updates, we are painting some red tomorrow so some wheel horse stuff might get thrown up on the line, won't be much though..... i blasted some stuff tonight that i had sitting at work in my 'office', but other than that i haven't had time to get anything done. most of the powder i do at work gets done after hours on a line thats not running. we are busy at the moment and all six lines we have are going 16-24 hours a day. unless i go in on 3rd shift (which aint going to happen) theres just no time to get a line to myself. the red i can squeeze in when we are running customers parts in case red, but the black i chose, we don't do very often. i have a bunch of black parts sitting at work ready to paint but just can't get anywhere to do it. also, my job is flat out from the time i get there until i leave, so the motivation to stay back isn't always there either. and sitting on the couch with the dogs sounds good when i get home too... which is what I'm doing right now...... Martin 2,131 #298 Posted April 17, 2014 finally painted some parts today. footrests, pto, some misc brackets and two seat pans, one was nice and the other had a lot of rust. the rusty one i had been layering primer on it (powder coat) and let it sit for a week or two between coats and da sanding with 220. finally had it ready for red about a month ago, but it has sat for a bit at work. scuffed it up with some fine scotch brite when i was doing the other parts today.... you can never have enough seat pans i say......... 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
