Martin 2,131 #227 Posted March 2, 2014 worked a little more on the engine today..... pulled the bearing plate and timing cover, will be replacing gaskets and seals. cleaned up the aluminum more on the block and other parts. think its almost there. will start to re assemble next week once i get all the seals and gaskets needed.... timing cover removed..... still am surprised how clean this engine is (other than the junk that i found in the sump). considering this engine sat out in the weather with parts missing, manifolds, spark plugs etc. it survived well. the bores had a little rust which cleaned up good, and there was water, mud and whatever else in the sump. i think i got lucky on this one...... main bearing on bearing plate side ...... was some discussion on the forum recently about the ball spacer in the governor being keyed to the cam gear. here is the plastic keyed version..... 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Martin 2,131 #231 Posted March 5, 2014 (edited) i would say they are more silver than gray originally. i painted mine the color they are as it was the closest to oem silver we have at work. out in the sun light its a little lighter in color, but its still darker than oem. if you look in some of my pics, the other 416s have untouched wheel color. I'm not sure why they went to silver but i like it with the red. i also like the old white, but not the white white they used in between. there have been some recent members on the forum who have painted wheels silver, maybe they can answer with the paint they used........ Martin 2,131 #236 Posted March 8, 2014 (edited) still not sure at this stage if we will be going Bill, so can't answer that...... small update. just came in from working on the engine, starting to get it back together, installed new seals and will be put back together with new gaskets. assembled the breather (i pulled the cap apart and took out the balls to be able to plate the steel pieces). don't have many pics on the engine assembly yet other than these..... installed new valve seals, the new ones (on the left) are slightly different than the old. the old ones were sealing ok but were getting a little hard so i thought i would replace them while its apart.... Onan parts for the assembly..... breather top in parts and back together. it took me a while to work out how this came apart, turns out the two steel pieces are pressed together so i clamped some vise grips on the lower part and used a large screwdriver to slowly separate the pieces. got them plated and time to get them assembled again.... manual lift lever ready to go back together..... installed on tractor..... pto parts ready for assembly. used new nyliner bushings 5666 and 5983. installed on tractor.... hopefully the engine will be well on the way to getting back together this afternoon..... You want my 1045 or C-175 next? no plating?. that is what you call invisible plating. just noticed the move myself, i was going to contact a mod to see if it should be moved now that this whole thing has turned into an epic journey but looks like its already taken place.... who would have known that Terry would have started all this at the time. its all his fault....... its like I've graduated from wheel horse tractors to the resto section...... sure, if you want to give me some tractors to keep, i will take them...... Martin 2,131 #241 Posted March 9, 2014 now some engine stuff..... installed the bearing plate seal and bolted the bearing plate on the engine. i installed the shims same as how they came off. checked crank end clearance and right at .008. spec is .006-.012. sealer on bolts as they run through to the inside of crankcase. now onto the gear case cover. cleaned up inside of cover, installed new governor shaft seal and crank seal. bolted up to crank case. bolts have copper washers (which were annealed to help them seal) and bolts had sealer, again some go through crank case. now onto oil pan. spent a fair bit of time cleaning this part, really nasty inside. same goes with oil pick up. was removed from pump and cleaned well, then installed back in pump.... oil pan all bolted up, engine back on its feet again..... now onto the upper part of the engine. Martin 2,131 #242 Posted March 9, 2014 couldn't stay away from the engine, so went out to do a little more...... got the rotor and ignition pickup on.... stator..... flywheel was previously cleaned up, magnets masked off and painted. flywheel and starter on. starter got a cosmetic rebuild only as id already gone through it, cleaned it out and got it working. i bead blasted the aluminum and threw some plated parts at it..... little premature here getting the engine on the tractor, but i needed to work out some wiring and battery cables, so i placed it on the tractor and couldn't resist a couple pics....... 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
