rmaynard 15,425 #1 Posted October 14, 2013 Just sold my 1967 Lawn Ranger yesterday, and I picked up an 857 today. Got a message from man in Carlisle, Pa. last week, who was selling an 857 for a neighbor. He sent me pictures and said that it didn't run because the neighbors late husband had taken off the carburetor, then he passed away. No one knows where the carburetor is. So I made him and offer that we agreed upon, and after a week of torrential rains, I finally went to pick it up this morning. Much to my surprise when I got there, they had found a deck, a snow plow, and a set of chains. They also had the original owners manual, plus a parts and service manual, and a box of miscellaneous parts. No carburetor. But that's okay, I bought a K181 at an auction Saturday, and it has a good carburetor. Here's my latest:

rmaynard 15,425 #4 Posted October 14, 2013 Will it be done in time for the Big show? I'm placing an order for decals now. Chances are quite good. But anything could happen between now and June. Funny you should ask about the big show. I drove past the fairgrounds on the way to pick this up. They were cleaning up from the apple festival. Couldn't help but imagine the sounds of all those Kohlers running.
stevasaurus 22,701 #5 Posted October 14, 2013 (edited) Bob, you have finally bought one of the best Wheel Horses out there. It will soon become your favorite and go to horse. Hard to beat the 8hsp short frame square hood. Did I mention the turning radius? Excellent compared to the earlier horses. Make it a worker...it will not let you down. squonk 41,017 #6 Posted October 14, 2013 Couldn't agree more. I had an 857 a couple of years ago. I ended up selling it to finance building Marvin so I could have a back-up hyd. lift tractor for the big blower. Wish I could have kept it.

Steve, If you remember, I had an 856 that I brought to the show in 2011, then sold it later that year. I have regretted selling it ever since. That was a really fun tractor to putter around on. Now that I have the 857 with snow plow and deck, it may become my go-to horse. However, I just ordered a new set of decals from Terry, so it looks like it's going to get the full "bob-effect".

boovuc 1,090 #12 Posted October 14, 2013 NIce 857! I have been "doing leaves" with my 857 and it is a fun tractor. I run over the leaves with the RD deck to break them down a little then hit them with the 310-8 once and they literally disappear into mulch. If I could only get it on the roof with a gutter attachment!!!!

rmaynard 15,425 #17 Posted October 14, 2013 looks good Bob see you should have not sold the ranger it has a opposing side effect Brian That's not a bad side effect. The problem is, I was trying to make room for the C-120 and B-100 that I just got. Now it appears that I am going to have to sell the B-100.

rmaynard 15,425 #20 Posted October 16, 2013 I rebuilt the carburetor off of the K181 bought at auction Saturday. Put it on the 857. Installed a new battery, check the oil, primed the fuel pump, turned the key and she started like a good Kohler should. Just a minor bit of tweaking the carburetor needle valves, and she purrs like a kitten. No unusual noises, bang, clunks or taps. But, she does have a smoking problem. Looks like the engines going to have to undergo some work. Took it for a drive around the house. Transmission is good. Don't see any leaks. I think this is going to be my winter project, so when I begin the process, I will start a new thread.
