stnygrm 11 #1 Posted October 13, 2013 Just picked a 310-8 (21-10k802) in great shape but mows terrible. The deck is a 05-42mr04. Not sure if the wrong blades are on this deck, while mowing strips of uncut grass are visible and the rear deck wheels leave impressions in the yard. Any help would be appreciated. what length blades should be on this deck and does any one have a part number for new ones. Thanks in advance!

dbartlett1958 96 #4 Posted October 16, 2013 These decks need to be leveled and adjusted properly, or you will get less than perfect results. Measure your blade length and be sure you have the correct blades as Garry has pointed out.
tunahead72 2,403 #5 Posted October 17, 2013 A couple of things in your photo don't look right... First, the lift lever is in the raised position, but your rear deck wheels appear to be touching the ground. That shouldn't happen. Also, it's hard to tell, but there might be something wrong with the way the deck hitch shaft is connected to the Tach-a-matic hitch. Can you post a close-up photo of that area, basically right under the engine? Are your blades sharp? And they're not installed upside down, are they? The owner's manuals that Garry linked (810403 & 810518) have very good instructions for mounting the mower, adjusting the level, and troubleshooting quality of cut problems. And the parts list (810407) is a great reference for figuring out how these things are supposed to go together. I'd recommend you take a look at those manuals, and look closely at your machine to see if everything is hooked up correctly. Let us know what you find. Thanks again! The lift lever should flop all the way down. The chain should have slack in it. The chain is for lifting only. The deck is held at the front by the mid attach-o-matic and the rear deck wheels should ride on the ground. They also set the cutting height. Unless something is damaged, your deck should easily give carpet smooth cut.
dbartlett1958 96 #10 Posted October 19, 2013 Take a look at this thread, regarding your Right hand side "fork" question.
stnygrm 11 #11 Posted October 19, 2013 Went and picked up a 48 inch side discharge today! I think the 42 rear discharge deck was bent, the new 48 seems to mow decent even before I level it and sharpen the blades! Now the resto can begin. Also the guy I got the deck from has a rototiller, back blade and a snow blade, are these attachments worth picking up and if so how much? thanks and I will keep you updated on the 310-
tunahead72 2,403 #12 Posted October 19, 2013 I don't believe Wheel Horse ever recommended a 48" deck for the 310-8. Not to say you shouldn't try it, there are others here who run that combination with good results, but there are also those who say 10 HP isn't enough power to run that deck well. Depends on your grass, and how often and under what conditions you mow. I'd be interested in hearing how it works out for you.
bitten 134 #13 Posted October 20, 2013 The attachments you mention are worth getting if you have a need for them. Being from N.Y. Im sure the snow blade would come in handy if you dont already have a means to remove your snow and should run you about $100. Just make sure you have the hitch on the back( also used for the tiller). The Tillers are nice if you have a garden and can be around $200-$300. Just make sure you get all the parts that come with it. The back blade has all kinds of uses but requires a rear lift on the tractor.$100. These prices dont mean to much but seem to be ball park figures and the highest I would pay.

It actually had no problem even on my steep hills. the blades are shot so I ordered new ones! would send a pic if I could figure out how to! thanks
stnygrm 11 #15 Posted October 20, 2013 ]Just mowed with the 48 inch deck on the 310-8, did good, just needs new blades as there is a small miss between the blades! No power issues at all!
WH nut 553 #16 Posted October 20, 2013 I read someplace. Don't remember where. But the rule of thumb is 4 inch a horse. With that being said, most WH had to large of decks on them. I have cut with a 48 inch on my 310 and it does a fine job as long as the grass isn't too tall. It can be under powered.
leeave96 487 #17 Posted October 21, 2013 One nice thing about a 48 inch deck on a 310-8 is that depending on the time of year, how tall/thick the grass is, you can always take a smaller bite when necessary, but still have the full width when you can use it.
