B-115

I have chance to pick up a really clean B-115 for $250. I only plan to use it to mow my .5 acre yard. Not planning to plow or till with it. I know the vert. Shaft motors dont get the love that the horizontal shafts motors get but i figure it is better than spending $1000+ for something new and not as reliable. Thoughts?

$250 in my opinion is quite pricey for a vertical. No more than $150 unless it is really in good shape.

Your not going to get many good opinions on here about the vertical shaft, but you will from me.It is a much better tractor than you will find for 100. dollars today. It will still be going years from now with very little maint.

It's odd to me that people put down these tractors when they are obviously superior to the junk you buy today. It's like people calling the JD you see at home depot junk.Theyare not a garden tractor, but if youuse one of them you will see that they are a good lawn tractor.

I had a 266H that was a cutting machine, sold it to a guy this spring and he raves about it.I buy and sell L&G tractors, and my tractor that I have used for about 3 yrs is a simplicity broadmoor with a 44" deck, vert shaft briggs twin. You won't find a better cutting tractor. With that said I have a 417-A that I am going to put a blade on for pushing snow.

I just saw your pic, that was a steal,I will buy them all day long like that and sell them for at least 600.That is going to last you a long time.

Vertical black hood....nice! Since your looking for a tractor to mow and only a 1/2 acre at that it should be fine. It looks like its been taken care of going by the picture. I would try to get it for $200.

Nice looking!  if it works for you...Great!.  once you get one, more will follow!   Even though its set up for a vertical shaft engine, that 42 RD deck looks pretty nice.

Check the front axle assembly.  The pivot for the front axle is made of sheet metal, instead of cast steel parts like the C series.   The center pivot on my B-115 was worn out and bent, so the whole assembly fell apart.    I fixed it, and plan to keep the tractor as a mower.    As others said, it is better than anything you can buy new for $1500, and is perfect for a 1/2 acre lot.     It also has the advantage of not having to deal with a mule drive for the deck, and points on the engine.   Yours still has the plastic rear fender, so if that is in good condition (no cracks), the mower was used carefully.    I paid only $50 for mine, but knew that I had to put $200 worth of work into it.    I'd offer him $200 if it's as good as it looks, and runs well.    Good luck.

Congratulations.   Good buy.
