My new 417-A

Recommended Posts

I sold my GT14 to my neighbor,so I have been looking at tractors.I bought this 417-A and have been working on it a couple days.It had water in the gas and when it stopped running the guy left it where it stopped.I don't know how long it sat there, but it's a good thing it quit when it did.The engine had about 3 /4 of a quart of oil in it and the trans was two quarts down also.

I couldn't get a straight answer about how long it sat,but I think the ppo took good care of it.The reasion I say that is because the gauges look good and the seat doesn't have a tear in it.

The gas and water in the carb had just started to jel,so I feel like I found it just in time.I put a kit in the carb, new fuel line all the way back and added a filter.I don't know why the tranny was low,I changed oil and filter and haven't seen any leaks yet.I will know more tomorrow,it was getting dark when I quit. While I'm on that subject, can anyone tell me if there is a screen to cover the hydro fan.I don't see one on any of the parts diagrams. The trash on top of the tranny and in the center console was about a tub full.

The 42' deck is really bad,it would take someone pretty good at metalwork to fix it.I really wasnt looking to mow with it,I am looking for a dozer blade right now.

I miss my GT 14,that horse would push a ton.I hope this will take it's place.

It only had three hubcaps with it.They don't have  a dent in them, but they are rusted all to hell.

And could someone tell me which frame and bracket I need for the dozer blade?

                                                                                                                                Thanks for looking.

I know a lot of things, they are just not useful

Put some Ags on the rear and a 48" dozer blade and it will push just as much as you gt14 did. I built a v blade for my 417A and it can do way more then I ever thought it could.

No screen on the hydro fan! It just needs cleaned out after mowing. Not sure what your asking for the plow but your tractor will accept any and all snow/dirt plows and frames from what fit the C-series tractors of the 70's all the way to anything fitting the 300, 400 and 500 series Wheelhorse. They are plentiful and relatively inexpensive.

Scott, You missed your calling.  You should be in the tractor accessory business.  That plow is way cool.  That 417A is very nice also.

Great job on that blade! Bet you could find a market for a few of those.

I am currently working on my 417-A that I bought off a guy who had it sitting for a couple years! I replaced the fuel pump, fuel line, points, and spark plugs and she started up thank goodness. This weekend I'll be putting a new bushing on the fuel tank petcock and changing the oil in the engine and hydro. It is pretty rusty overall but I am excited to get it ready to be a strong worker in time for snow. I'll have to post pics soon.

I can't seem to find a definite number on the points.I have the KT17QS type 2 code 24363.Is 47-15003s a good number?

I think I will make a guard of some kind for the hydro fan,I can just see it inpeices, and I don't like all the trash I found on the axle, and in the console. If I hadn't been replacing the gas line I would not have seen it.Maybe just a peice of hardware cloth.

I can't find an ipl that goes as high as spec 24363 either. 4715003 is still a good number. Try it here

Got a couple pics of my tractor

As you can see in the second pic the tires arerounded, like they have too much air. When I checked the  pressure it was only 5 lbs. What I found is there is tubes in all the tires, and the tubes in the back are too small I beleive. The reason I say that is,when I took the core out the stem went inside and I had to use long thin needle nose pliers to get it back.I'm thinking of just taking the tubes ou and installing stems.I dont think the tires can be that bad,at least nothing visible.I'm just thinking the tube is so small it is just pushing up in the middle of the tire.

But anyway, I sure like this tractor.I have about 400. in it as it stands.

I replaced a hose on the lift control that had been leaking for a long time. The oil caused dirt and grass to accumulate in the console area, and om the transaxle.

The 42" deck is rough,I am going to attempt a repair.I am not experienced at cutting and shaping the metal, but I am going to give it a go.

My primary reason for getting this tractor was to install a dozer blade, and I bought a 42" blade and bracket today for 125.

The ground spee of this tractor really surprised me,almost makes me think someone changed the pulley.I'm going to check and see if the belt is the standard size.

Wheel-N-It

Hey, you got a nice one there! Only $400 in it so far is really good. There is no screen on the hydro fan, and the louvers in the hood tell you its a 1986 model. The '85s had a smooth hood. How many hours are on the meter???

By the way, I was mowing with my 417A today and got stung on the lower lip by a hornet. OUCH!!!
