Tapet57 2 #1 Posted October 9, 2013 I just joined your forum. I have retired and bought my first couple project tractors. I have identified most but this one has no labels or stamps. Can anyone help? It seems to be old, cast iron hood with stamped "db". Thanks
GlenPettit 1,716 #2 Posted October 9, 2013 (edited) The basic frame and rear end sure looks Wheel Horse to me (early 60's), the the hood is not. The letters db could be for "David Bradley", that company mostly made attachments that most any brand of small Garden Tractor could pull. Hood may be from a 'Walk-behind'. It has a generic seat on now. More pictures would help, (full side views). Sure looks strong and mean. Edited October 9, 2013 by GlenPettit
CasualObserver 3,408 #3 Posted October 9, 2013 Yes, from your pic, the tractor appears to be an average 60s short frame Wheel Horse, but that hood is definitely David Bradley. That hood style was used in the early 60s (about 60-61 I think) on their 4 wheeled garden tractors. Original hood color would have been gold/white.
Tapet57 2 #4 Posted October 9, 2013 Thanks, I'll get more pictures posted. It does say wheel horse on the dash, perhaps a picture of this would help

Lane Ranger 10,943 #6 Posted October 9, 2013 (edited) That's one use of a rare David Bradley Hood I have never seen before - The DB hood is probably more rare than the right WH hood for that tractor! Edited October 9, 2013 by Lane Ranger
953 nut 55,045 #7 Posted October 9, 2013 There is a lurking under that "DB" hood, a few more detailed photos and I'm sure we can figure it out. Looks like someone put a "Deere" seat on it too. We need to bring this horse back to it's previous glorey.
GlenPettit 1,716 #8 Posted October 10, 2013 This may be the DB Hood we see on your Wheel Horse tractor body:
Tapet57 2 #9 Posted October 10, 2013 I spy a Techy too. I am new to this forum stuff, my wife helped me copy this quote and register. What does it mean? But you guys seem like a fun group...more photos
wallfish 16,980 #10 Posted October 10, 2013 Techy is short for Tecumseh which is the make of your engine. Most members here prefer the Kohler engines and it's always an ongoing ribbing about the Tecumseh engines. I hope you didn't think it was something personal, It certainly wasn't intended to be. By the way, that tractor looks like my 1964 654
Kelly 1,029 #11 Posted October 10, 2013 (edited) The WH part of your tractor is a 1964 could be a 604, 654, or 704, and with it having the Tecumseh in it and no key switch, I see the factory plug in the hole I'm going to say it was/is a 604 meaning 6 is engine size 6hp - 0 stands for pull start - the 4 means 1964 Edited October 10, 2013 by Kelly
Tapet57 2 #12 Posted October 11, 2013 Great Help Guys, I'm just getting started with 2 Tucumseh in what I have identified as a 60 Suburban. Do you agree. I also bought a '69 V8 and '73 with Kohler engines. Haven't had a chance to compare. I bought before he was scraping them.

CasualObserver 3,408 #15 Posted October 11, 2013 Great Help Guys, I'm just getting started with 2 Tucumseh in what I have identified as a 60 Suburban. Do you agree. No, I would say the tractor in your second pictures is a 653. (Identical to the 633 and 753 too, but those have Kohler engines... and more often than not those still have their Kohler engines!) A 1960 Suburban has the engine mounted between your legs directly in front of the seat and sits much lower. Very different. Look through the gallery (http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/forum/17-wheel-horse-picture-gallery/) and you'll see the differences.
