1993 310-8, Kohler Magnum 10 Info

Recommended Posts

P3x

Picked up a 1993 310-8 with a Kohler Magnum 10 that's been sitting for a bit. Bought it non-running from a guy who had for a year; he purchased it from the daughter of an elderly gent who passed. The original owner purchased this tractor new and kept it well maintained which it shows and from the paperwork/maintenance history that came with it. Purchased it basically site unseen as it came with a nice 42" SD Deck, Vac Blower, Sgl Stg Snow Blower, and Dozer Blade and the price was right.

As the story goes, the PO used it several times but got tired of having to play with the carb to get it running. Got it home checked things out and put the battery on a charger. Battery is pretty much useless but was able to turn over several times to attempt to start it. Did not fire at all and did not have time to continue TS, so will be going through it to get it up to speed.

Started to research the Kohlers which are new to me as I've only owned a 520H. Found some info here and Toro.com but does not seem to be too much available about this model.  Looking for tech info and a good source for Kohler parts - especially Carbs and/or a carb rebuild kit. Looks as though they used a couple of different models but could not find any markings on the carb to determine what I have.

The Tractor is a 1993 Classic, Model 73320.  Engine Model is M10S, Spec. 461545, SN 2228+

Any and all info is appreciated!

Don't give up, you should be able to find plenty of information and parts for your Magnum.

Check the Wheel Horse Reference section here on RedSquare, especially Wheel Horse Manuals (for manuals) and RedSquare Links (for parts suppliers -- OPEEngines.com, PartsTree.com and JacksSmallEngines.com are a few of my favorites).

The Kohler web site (KohlerEngines.com) is also a great source for information.

You can also get Kohler parts at a lot of NAPA dealers.

And don't forget your local Kohler dealer.

You will have a walbro carb on that engine.  It is rebuildable, but usually not needed.  Just strip it down and spray it out with gumnout carb cleaner.  No in store brands.

Turn main needle in all the way, and then back out 1-1/2, then screw the idle needle out 1 to 1-1/4.  Adjust from there.

Warm the engine up on the old unknown oil and then get it changed ASAP.

Pull the head and do a decarbon.  A 1993 will definatly need it.

Thanks for the info.  Hope to get back to it this week and determine the problem(s).

Interested to see how it mows and the fuel savings over using the 520.

Kohler Magnums are great engines, my 18hp twin is a little better than my 20hp Onan on gas but doesn't run as quiet or smooth. Still a great engine, starts just as easy and fast as my Onan.

Not trying to step over FordDeisel but I have much better success using spray can brake cleaner.

I agree, brake cleaner works wonders, but will eat any rubber up on the carb. Best to get that out first. Carb cleaner works too(that's what it is made for). Gumout may be in a pretty can, but store brand carb cleaner works just as well as any other carb cleaner.

I don't usually remove the carb when I overhaul my Magnum, just drop the float bowl. If you do end up removing the carb there is a gasket between the carb and air cleaner that usually tears when removed, make sure if it does you completely remove and replace it.

Thanks for the continued input. Got a new battery and determined the fuel pump is teats-up.  . Read through the posts about parts availability to rebuild it but decided to go with the newer "plastic" model available. Will try to rebuild it in the future if I can get a quality rebuild kit. Since I opened things up, cleaning the tank, replacing the fuel line and installing a fuel filter and will clean/rebuild the carb.  As it generally works, received all extraneous parts but the one I need (fuel pump).

So far impressed with the condition this tractor and 42" deck is in. Came with a Sgl stage Blower. Not sure of the model number and looks as tho it has not been used for a while. Hope to get it in running condition for winter.  Also came with numerous other parts, PTO Bell assy, 2 sets of axels, bearings, about a dozen belts, hardware, filters, etc.  Not sure if all fit the 310 as the original owner had prior WH tractors. Will have to hunt down the PNs of the items marked to find out their applicability and determine the models the spare parts without numbers fit.

Will let you know how everything turns out after I install the fuel pump. May just rig up a gravity feed tank in the interim to get it running and ensure no other issues exist.

Thanks for all suggestions.

Finally received the replacement fuel pump - plastic style. Easy R&R. Cleaned the carb while mounted on the engine, filled the carb bowl with gas and reinstalled. Took a little bit to fire with starting fluid but basically started easily and ran pretty well. Started adjusting the Idle and Main screw and it seems ready to go. Checked the Tranny fluid and looks like a Malt Shake - a lot of water. Drained it over 2 days then added 1 Pt. Marvel Mystery Oil and the remainder with Rotilla 5-40W.  Plan to drive it around for a while then drain it to get all moisture and any left over crud out.

Surprised at how well the engines runs with just basic carb adjustment.  Replaced the blades on the 42 SDD and look forward to see how it cuts.  Think I am going to like this model.

Thanks for all the input!

Sounds good, but I wouldn't run it with that 5W/40 / MMO mix for too long.  There's a comprehensive manual of lubrication recommendations in the Manuals section here on RedSquare that recommends 2 quarts of 90/140 GL-5 gear oil for your transmission.  You'll see some debate about whether other weights are acceptable, but basically you need something thicker than motor oil in that trans.

That particular document is really handy to keep around, because it also has tractor and mower belt charts, mower blade charts and a mower spindle cup identification chart.

Have you changed the engine oil yet?

EDIT:

Here's the manual I was talking about:

Just thought of something else...

There should be a rubber boot that covers the bottom of the gear shift lever, check that and replace it if it's missing or damaged, it will keep water from getting inside the transmission again.  It's cheap and readily available, and easy to replace.

Downloaded the Lub Manual - great reference doc. Nice to have everything in on place.

Do not plan to drive too long with the MMO/Rotella mix in the Tranny. Just long enough to flush out residual water and crud. Read through the different posts and plan to refill with 90 or 90-140W Gear Oil. Seems this tractor must have been left outside for a bit before I bought it with the shift lever boot the most likely candidate allowing water to get in. Will be stored indoors while I have it but will be adding a new boot on my next misc. parts order.

I checked the engine oil while going through it. The oil seemed new/recent but looked a little "heavy" like the straight 50W used in aircraft engines.  Changed it anyway prior to starting the engine so I know what I have.

With winter coming been searching for a snow cab and have not found one locally. Was a little concerned of the height dimension installed on the 520 - whether I can fit it in the garage. Think it will be no problem mounted on the 310 so bit the bullet and ordered a new cab.  If its too tall mounted on the 520, will resort to mounting it on the 310.  Hope shipping cost is not too much...

Thanks for the tips!

All good info.  One reason your tranny is getting water in it is likely the shifter boots are dry rotted and broken-up.  They are cheap and easy to replace.  You've got a GREAT tractor and with that 42 inch deck, it is a super combo and I can't imagine not getting much better gas mileage than the 520H.  I've got a 314-8 with the Kohler Magnum and it is a GREAT engine - darn near bullet proof.  Lot of great info here!

One other thing...

Ah yes pictures. Took several when I first got it home.  Came with quite a few components I have yet to go through.

Dang!  That is a lot of stuff there - all you need now is a clevis hitch and moldboard plow for the rear and you are set!

There was quite a bit included with it. Have no idea what the snow blower's model number. Looks to be a fairly old unit in Ok shape. Any tips on how to identify it?

Took the 310 out for a 10 minute romp to get the tranny oil sloshed around to drain any residual moisture. Ran in all gears Hi and Low and operated well.  A little difficulty here and there to shift into gear but hoping it will resolve after I change the oil to 80/90W Gear oil. Will be mounting the deck to see how it cuts next.

First time I've driven a non-Onan WH. Surprised at how smooth and quiet the Kohler 10 operates. The steering on the tractor is tight compared to my 520.  Will have to watch tight turns in hi gear so I don't flip it!
