Solvent recomendations

Recommended Posts

I picked up a parts washer today and wonder what you fellows are using that isnt flamable and cuts the grease and sludge fairly good. I have an attached garage under my home so I dont really want to use kerosene with all the sparks I sometimes make with grinders and welders.

Thanks

Jack

I would check with a local auto parts store. I worked at a Napa and we sold solvent from an outside supplier in 5 gal. Pails

I'm using Kerosene now,  I used to use (and strongly prefer) Mineral Spirits but Kero is half the price and I need at least 10 gallons in my tank.

I keep the lid closed when I'm not using it - keeps it clean as well as preventing sparks getting in it.  Keeps the smell down too.

While I don't have a parts cleaner, I have used them . Check out TSC here-http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/crownreg%3B-psc-1000-parts-cleaner-5-gal ,this can be picked up locally. Grainger- http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/parts-washer-cleaners-and-solvents/automotive-lifting-garage-equipment/fleet-and-vehicle-maintenance/ecatalog/N-cuy will give you an idea about what is available in water base too.

The Safety Kleen company parts washers all over the country use Mineral Spirits.

Mineral Spirits come in different flammable ratings.

We used to use one called 142 Solvent, which has a flash point of 142*, but are now using a product called 150 Solvent....150* falsh point.

140* is the "magic" number for the flash point for solvents according to OSHA standards.

Sorry to bring a thread out of the mothballs, but any new suggestions for a parts washer solvent??

Getting ready to drag my old HF one out that I haven't used in years and need something to put in it.

I see TSC has a Crown psc parts cleaner that seems to be as reasonable in price as I can find for a parts solvent.

Thanks, Randy

I’ve used mineral spirits in the past and it worked great. I’ve also used solvent that I got a hell of a deal on but it’s hard to get ahold of the guy. The last stuff I bought was from autozone and I’m happy with it. It does need to be changed from time to time. Don’t get any of the citrus based stuff, I’ve had to use it at an old job and it sucked. Safety kleen is the best but it’s pricey.

That is what I have been using for several years, works well.
