1995 416-8 belt release/adjuster

Recommended Posts

Remember me telling you guys about the guy who gave me my 854? No? Well, I asked about the drive belt  on his 416-8 and it's all good now.  Today he told me that the plastic adjusting nut for the deck belt (below the grille) is froze up and one of his spindles is as well. (mower deck, no idea what size)  I looked for an answer here, and didn't find it. He says he cannot release the belt via that big plastic nut, so he can't fix or diagnose the spindle problem.  Before I drive 60 miles I'd like to have some idea what to look for. He took it to TORO dealer, they said they couldn't figure it out. Thank you in advance. :angry-banghead:  :angry-banghead:

Sounds like it needs WD-40/PB blaster applied to the adjustment parts.

I had a mule drive that was so rusted i had to use a little heat on it to get it to move. Sounds like this thing hasn't been used in a while. Maybe the best thing would be to remove the deck and the mule and go through it all. The mule may be bent from over tightening. Seen that a lot. May have to cut the PTO belt to get things off.

I'll take my best knife & side cutters. Probably won't take pictures to preclude showing proof of my ignorance. Thanks

Are you talking about the adjustment knob on the front of the mule drive?  You ARE turning that CLOCKWISE to loosen the belt, right? :)

Yes, that one. No idea, my buddy just said it was locked up, I told him to get the deck out and see why, he said he'd have to cut the belt, I told him to wait til I could get on here and get some advice. Thanks.

Just turn the PTO pulling the belt out......it will stretch around the pulleys on the bell.....I just had one the same way......once off I used a vise grip on the shaft of the adjuster and, with the help of lubricant, got the mule loosened up.....

He cut the new belt, got the adjuster off, brought it to me. I sili kroiled it, put in a big vice, got it moving with a 12" pipe wrench, it froze in place, and would not budge. Heat might have freed it up, but he got a new one and all is well.

No photos, sorry. I was not on the scene except for tying to free it up after it was off the tractor.
