AMC RULES 37,127 #1 Posted September 26, 2013 Wondering if someone can someone help me modify a downdraft oil bath air cleaner into an updraft version like those used on RJ's?
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,330 #2 Posted September 26, 2013 Craig, I bought one at the show this summer. If I remember I will bring it to kent. I will also bring a correct updraft I have as well.

Jake Kuhn 1,554 #4 Posted September 27, 2013 I have changed one and am going to do another. You have to put a plug at the bottom with a whole just small enough for the wing nut rod to go through. and the top needs to be drilled out, not sure exactly how big. The elbow you have will not work...not sure if it can be modified. The original elbows are very hard to find...there is also a bracket that will go under it to support it and will bolt to the oil pan bolt. Check out the original one on ebay right now...crazy price!
AMC RULES 37,127 #5 Posted October 2, 2013 Instead of worrying about the govt furlough all day... I decided to focus on turning this down draft oil bath into a functioning up draft unit. Had a few people tell me it couldn't be done, but that's when I usually do my best work. Picts here pretty much tell the whole story, any questions about the process...feel free to ask. Basically, all you're doing is moving the fresh air inlet from the bottom to the top of the unit. Once completed, and filled with oil...I tested it out by letting it run un-tethered for about a half hour in the back yard while I cleaned up. Then took it out for a couple hot laps around the house, up hills, and down, high rpm's and at idle... performed flawlessly, with no runs, drips, or errors. Actually, while running...engine sounds much quieter to my ear now. Would you believe, the wife even commented on how good it sounded.
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,330 #6 Posted October 3, 2013 Sweet Craig !! I do have a question for the members that may be able to assist here. On my son's rj58 with kohler and correct updraft it is not getting air and sometimes will just not start unless I remove the oil bath air cleaner then she fires up. Can anyone tell me why this happens? I know it is not getting air but what could be the blockage?

AMC RULES 37,127 #8 Posted October 3, 2013 No sweat... I know it's been done before, just couldn't find any documentation of the process.
dclarke 4,032 #9 Posted October 3, 2013 Thanks, Craig. I have one for my rj but it's on the shelf. I'm going to have to look to see if it's correct or if I need to do what you did. If I do this thread will definitely make it easier.... By the way, your rj looks Really Good!

Coadster32 793 #11 Posted October 3, 2013 Nice pics and such showing the how-to's of it. Always doubt them when they say it can't be done. Looks like a silicone pot holder for a gasket seal....No? They are good for up to 400deg, and I think a great alternative. (I used one on my still)
CasualObserver 3,408 #12 Posted October 3, 2013 Did I miss where you showed what you used to plug the bottom? Is that a powerade lid laying there?

AMC RULES 37,127 #14 Posted October 3, 2013 Did I miss where you showed what you used to plug the bottom? Is that a powerade lid laying there? They say necessity is the mother, or is a mother...I don't know which? Good eye Jason...on the temporary Power-Aid lid that I backed with a fender washer. At some point, I'll fire up the welder and plug the bottom permantly... but, in the meantime it will suffice for the time being.
squonk 41,017 #15 Posted October 3, 2013 Great Job! Keep the Powerade lid. You might get some sponsorship money to get you by . A buck a hot lap! Hey, it works for John Force!!
buckrancher 2,679 #16 Posted October 4, 2013 Craig the original one I have looks like it's a soft plug in the opening on the bottom Brian

AMC RULES 37,127 #18 Posted October 4, 2013 Also Brian, I'm wondering if the air tube(the part I capped)on your original extends beyond the bottom of the oil bath...or is yours flat on the bottom? As seen in this pict...
buckrancher 2,679 #19 Posted October 4, 2013 I'll try to get some pic's up before we leave for the steam-a-rama show in Pa this afternoon

AMC RULES 37,127 #21 Posted October 4, 2013 Brian... looks like I've installed that Power-Aid lid upside down.
buckrancher 2,679 #22 Posted December 29, 2013 craig I hate to say this but looking at your pictures of the top of the air cleaner cover you made the hole too big and by letting the center pipe come up thru the cover you basically shut the air flow off by allowing the top and bottom pieces to come together sealing off the air intake under the top cover between the oil cup look at the last pic's I posted of a original one Brian
AMC RULES 37,127 #23 Posted December 29, 2013 Then...how is the engine running with no air flow Brian?
buckrancher 2,679 #24 Posted December 29, 2013 probably because the surfaces are not flat take it off the tractor and turn it upside down and look where the two pieces come together under the top cover. The bottom oil cup and the top cover should have a half inch gap between them Brian
AMC RULES 37,127 #25 Posted December 29, 2013 (edited) BRB OK...I see what you're sayin' Brian...the first pict shows the air space when the lid is even with the top of the tube. Though it's hard to see...the second pict shows that while my air intake is reduced..I still have approximately 1/4" open...checked around the lids circumference...which is obviously enough to allow it to run.
