Rustoleum paint question

Thinking of painting my 520H.  What color of Rustoleum should I use.

I use regal red and it seems to be a close match

Probably not as close to original, but I sure like "Sunrise Red" --- kinda has that 'pop' that makes red ...well, red

I used regal red on my redo. If you are spraying with a gun, I have read that regal,sunrise mixed 50/50 is a very close match.

Sunrise Red looks nice because it's brighter than the original, but almost too bright.   Regal Red is closer match, especially for newer models like the 520.  

Most stores carry one or the other, but usually not both, because they're so close in color.   Might have to do some searching.

This is true - my walmart has sunrise, but no regal, the home depot around the corner has regal but no sunrise!

Heres my 16 Auto recently done in Regal Red and an original paint later model Toro Wheelhorse tall chute blower, no clue what the comparision to the other red would be,,,,,

There is a shade or so difference but in person its not to far off.

My local Rural King has both Regal Red & Sunshine Red!

I wonder how the 50/50 Regal/Sunrise Red looks.....So this would be called Regalrise Red.

I'm painting mine with Sunrise. It is definitely brighter, that is why I chose it. I would say it is very close to true red in the spectrum.

 

My Wally World has both, didn't make my decision easy. However I wanted more "pop" from the paint, like pacer stated.

Done this so far with Rustoleum regal red...

 

 

IMO sunrise red is just a tic brighter/lighter than regal red.

I think I am going to use a spray gun or I might try to roll it on.  I am sure you have all heard of roll painting your car with Rustoleum.  I did a Jd snow blade and it turned out good.  Looks like the Regal would be better for late models. One problem I am having if I decide to spray is thinning.  If you read online people are all over the place.  Someone said the can says no more than 15% but I have heard up to 50%.  Since this would be my first spray job using a gun I want what would be the most forgiving.

Well don't do 50% thinner that's about like spraying it with a garden hose. There is no way to stop any paint that thin from running. I am not a professional but I have sprayed a lot of paint.

 

Here is what I found, if it's 70 degrees or more I use very little thinner. Now you have to realize I do paint outside which does make a difference too. By outside I don't mean usually wide open as I paint in a big open door on my shop. I don't let the tractor sit outside and get hot before I paint either. I don't mix large batches of paint to start with. Depending on what I am painting I usually mix 4 or 8 oz. of paint. I use a measuring cup, For the Van Sickle paint I use, I put the paint in, then you add the hardener( in my case that is 1 oz for 8 oz. of paint ) and stir, let it sit for about 10 minutes covered, then I will add an ounce of thinner maybe less depending on the temp and stir it with a paint stick. When you pick the stick up out of the paint watch it run off the stick. If it looks too thick add a little more thinner until you are satisfied. Now you don't spray it on what you want to paint yet! Take a scrap piece of metal and shoot some on there, if the coverage looks good and it doesn't run you should be good to go. If your gun doesn't spray it good you have a couple choices. You can thin it a little more or increase your air pressure a little or adjust your spray pattern until it works for you.

 

Before you do any spraying with a gun though you should read as much as you can about the adjustments on your gun. If you have never used a gun before don't assume that you should just start with your newly restored tractor without practicing first. When it comes to painting even professionals have problems from time to time. Don't get in a hurry or discouraged when you get runs, orange peel or it is dull. You can always wet sand and put some more paint on it.

 

Take it slow and remember that old adage if you fail, try, try again you'll get the hang of it.

If I wanted to touch up a few chips on the silver rims. What color would be close using the Dupli-color Scratch Fix 2 in 1. The small metal bottles with the brush inside?
