forphase1 5 #1 Posted September 11, 2013 Quick question about PTO clutches. I've got a 310-8 that I've been working on getting back on the road. Got it running and put a new drive belt on it. Hooked up the mower deck, and tried cutting some grass. It worked great for about a minute, then the clutch seemed to start slipping and not turning. It was extremely hot to the touch. I checked all the pulleys and everything is flowing well. The belt had good tension on it, but wasn't too tight either. I let the pto cool after adjusting some things and tried again, and again it cut well for about 30 seconds, then started slowing down again and then stopped. I guess that the pto is worn out and needs something replaced, but I'm not sure. Any thoughts on what to trouble shoot? Thanks. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

If so, I would first try adjusting the trunion on the shaft tighter, one turn at a time and try it again. If the Pulley is not on tight to the Shaft/Keyway, it will move in with the pressure of the PTO Clutch. Otherwise as Jeff says. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

All the deck spindles turn smoothly by hand, so I don't think they are the hold up. I'll play with them more tonight or tomorrow evening, but they seem to move fairly freely. I've not had to do any work yet on any of my PTOs, so still learning a bit on how they work and what to troubleshoot. I'll pull out the parts guide to identify what the trunion is and see if that needs adjusted. Everything appears to be used, but not in worn shape, though again this is my first real PTO work so I'm not sure if I'd immediately recognize the difference between just a used and a worn disc. Another thing to check. You say you've been working on it. Has the Crankshaft Drive Pulley been removed/refitted?. The Clevis pin has been replaced by a loose fitting screw, the mower cute great until it comes under a load then the blades slow or stop but the engine does not bog down. I took the clutch off but I don't know how it's supposed to look, is it just metal on metal? I don't know. I have never worked on one before. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Jeff-C175 7,199 #6 Posted September 12, 2013 (edited) No, it's not supposed to be metal to metal. There is (supposed to be) a friction material on the round plate attached to the engine. Older clutch discs had a RIVETED lining and the newer ones are bonded... no rivets. If you buy a replacement it will not have rivets. Looks like this, that friction material is perhaps 1/8" thick or so: photo courtesy amazon.com The fact that you have a screw instead of the clevis doesn't mean much, it will still work. Jeff-C175 7,199 #8 Posted September 12, 2013 That pic is Toro part #94-6650 which as far as I know, replaces pretty much ALL the PTO discs. Kinda pricey though, I've seen them from $55 up to $80, so if you are looking for NEW, shop carefully. They come up on ebay fairly often, both new and used. I personally would be VERY careful buying one used, you really don't have any way of knowing how much 'meat' is left on the disc, and it's doubtful that the seller would give you a straight and accurate answer.
