sdwyer41 8 #1 Posted September 9, 2013 My new mower has a very loud mower deck. When turning the deck by hand you can tell the noise is coming from the left side blade. My neighbor told me that rd decks tend to be noisy. I dont know as this is my first WH. Is this normal? Do I check the bearings by trying to rock the blade? It did not feel at all loose when I sharpened it. (used a file and did it the hard way). I put a lot of grease im the deck. my gun ran dry before I could see it oozing out anywhere on the deck. The rest if the fittings were full or nearly so. I don't want to tear anything up, so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Steve
groundhog47 347 #2 Posted September 9, 2013 (edited) It all depends on who noisy, grinding, growling squealing is not good. Does it also wobble/wiggle with your hand. I used to grease before and after each use, then I read about grease types and overgreasing. I didn't realize you could over grease bearings. The experts agree yes you can. Prob would be a good idea to disassemble and check bearings after a cleaning, regrease, reevaluate . The sealed bearings http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=simldPb88UU (rubber/rubber metal backed) have seals that can be (most) gently pried off, clean good and put a small amount of grease back in and pop seal back in. They also say mismatched / incompatible greases do damage. Give it a try, if bearings don't rotate smoothly you'd need replacements more than likely. sdwyer41 8 #3 Posted September 9, 2013 No grinding or squeeling, just a loud roar. The blades feel tight with no wiggle. May be a weekend project. Thanks fir the tips. Steve
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,031 #4 Posted September 9, 2013 Remove the belt so the pressure is off the bearings and then feel their condition. Garry
leeave96 487 #5 Posted September 10, 2013 (edited) Sounds like you got a bad bearing. I've got a 36 inch RD deck and it is not very noisy - unless it mows a rock... Edited September 10, 2013 by leeave96
