Just had my blade fly off my deck......again.

The narrow nut behind tthe blade is that a 31 mm? I can't believe I had a blade fly off again.

With the noise it made I thought I put the piston rod through the block and kept looking

for oil to leak. Apparently I'm not tightening these suckers enough. I use a long breaker

bar. I like doing all my work in the shed where the tractors are but I may have to move

to the garage where my air tools are and put those blades on at 600 ft lbs.

Use the air-impact wrench with caution....it'll strip threads right off of the end of the spindle shaft.  There should be a thick flat washer between the nut and blade.

Nuts I believe are 3/4-16 UNF  I use a low profile Nylock jamb nut.

use blue thread locker on the bolts and give 24 hrs for the thread locker to set up do not over tourqe the bolts or you will create stripping and breaking problem. when I tighten the bolts down on mine I use the blade itself as an opposing force while tightening with a wrench or ratchet. this should take care of your problem and be careful those flying blades are dangerous!

Butch, is it possible the spindle (belt routing through mule) is turning in wrong direction? They normally rotate in a "tightening" direction If not at minimum swap loosening nut to new position and if gets loose at same spot will need a new nut, if old spot shaft threads are culprit, does this make sense, I also agree with the locktite stuff, the nylock might be good also.

Gerry I have the belt on the pulley the way it comes out of the mule. It's not flip-flopped. Let me tell ya that when it came off it did some major damage to the threads. I did get the nut to go back on. I do have loctite and was curious as to why I didn't use it. But I'm glad I got the nut back on. Didn't want to spend another $50 for a shaft.

On my two 48" decks, I use an easy-off product when reinstalling the blades

after sharpening annually.  I have never had a blade come off in over 20 years

with these decks.  On the otherhand, beause of corrosion, I have had blades

that were the dickens to get off when I first bought them, hence the easy-off.

Butch, you must be doing something wrong.  Just saying...

Perhaps you are not getting them tight enough. Looked a a couple of pages in the spindle charts and they show a torque of 80-120 ft. lbs.

Tarcelo this isn't the first time I've lost a blade. I have a 20 inch ratchet that I use. This time I'll use my 1/2"

torque wrench and see what happens. My wrenches are wide and I worry about getting it pinched between the blade and

housing. Now I'm just sitting waiting on the parts.

I've never lost a blade , ( not looking to either )  I've never used loc-tight or the vinyl lock nuts - use my 1/2 " Porter and Gable impact - started using the impact primarily  because getting them off was a bear and dangerous ( old school 2 x 4 under the blade with a breaker bar ) , I don't go nuts tightening with the impact - after it bottoms out I rap it hard a few times and quit .

I would second the 2X4 or 2X6 between blade and housing. If you use a socket put a short extension

on so you can stay clear of blades.

Wow. It's going ti take 3 weeks to get that center double pulley. I called Toro themselves and they don't have it in stock. Who ever the person is that has them

will drop ship it to me. It's coming to the time you won't be able to get parts for these old things.

The double pulley wore down a lot of the spindle. You can even see a groove that the bearing balls wore into the shaft. I still don't know what stops the pulley from free wheeling on the spindle.
