neighbor had a small smoke out. so I get to rewire it. 

The wires for the rectifier, wire to coil and battery power for ignition have all burnt. He also did some wiring years ago he does not remember so good any more so I'm going to start over. 

I'm looking for a wiring diagram for the machine. I could only find one for a 12 hp. 

 

I,m thinking the switch might be bad because using a test light  I had power at the wire going to the bat. and to the rectifier with the switch off.

Looking to find out witch post to hook battery power and coil power to.

Operator manual with wiring diagram

 

Uses 101917 5-terminal 4-position S-R-B-I-A ignition switch replaced by 92-6785 5-terminal 4-position S-R-B-I-L ignition switch

Thanks for the link just printed it out.

Any ideas if post A should have power all the time?

Dose these ignition switches go bad?  Could it have shorted inside?

Is 14ga wire heave enough?

The A post on the switch is for accessories and should only have power when the key is in the second position. Off is considered the #1 position.

14 gauge wire is fine for wiring.

Yes, switches go bad.

what is special about that switch? I have seen it priced 50 to70 bucks and there are others 10 to15.

The switch contacts are rated for a much higher current because there is no start solenoid.

The starting current goes through the switch. :)

I believe the 1972 Raider 14 has a bendix starter, solenoid and 15 amp stator so ithe ignition switch is not the heavy type used with starter/generators and no solenoid.

 

The 92-6785 5-terminal 4-position key switch is not that common and supply/demand comes at a premium.

OFF, RUN with Accessories, RUN only, START

Ok now I have a new switch it is part# 92-6785 the switch that was in there must be the other part #.

The posts are marked S  A  M  G  and the one that has the tab covering two posts is not marked.

The print I have does not have a wire coming from the mag.

Does any buddy have any idea on how to hook this switch up?

If original you should have battery ignition. That means the switch should have an I (eye) terminal to power the ignition.

 

The switch you have with the M is for magneto ignition.

 

Sounds like the switch is not correct for the 92-6785 part number.

 

There is a 8362 switch for magneto ignition (L-B-M-S-R) 5-terminal 4-position but it likely has at least two larger terminals to power the starter because these models did not use a starter solenoid. The wire for these terminals is 6 gauge.

The mystery was solved over the weekend. I needed the service bulletin to get the wiring correct.
