timo4352 147 #1 Posted September 1, 2013 Is there any reason that I shouldn't change my front tires and wheels from the original 15 x 6.00 - 6 over to 4.8 - 8 ?? The tractor is a 1985 310-8. I like the look better for sure. They are only one inch taller overall. The rear tires are already one inch larger than stock (23 X 9.50-12) . I tried my cart tires which are just like wheelbarrow tires and it's like having power steering compared to the turf tires. It seems to ride better - or maybe that's just in my head? Now for the summer the wheelbarrow tread may be fine, but for the winter and snowblowing I'm gonna want a different tread. A carlisle sno-hog or a tri-rib me thinks. I have seen some threads here about using tri-ribs in the snow and them working quite well - I was kinda surprised by this but what do I know? The tri-ribs do look cool, if they do the trick year 'round that's gotta be the way to go, I think... Am I missing something here? Tim
Kelly 1,029 #2 Posted September 1, 2013 Go for it, only thing I see, is the steering spindles for the 6" rims are 1" longer top to bottom to make up for the shorter tire, and keep the tractor level, when adding the taller tire the front will set a bit higher, if your going with the narrow tire be sure to get the early narrow rims, if you need a set let me know I have a few sets here. squonk 41,017 #3 Posted September 1, 2013 Kelly, I was thinking of doing the same to my C-145. Do the same rules apply?
sorekiwi 761 #4 Posted September 1, 2013 This has had the shorter spindles swapped onto it as well.
Irv 115 #5 Posted September 1, 2013 I put the 8" on my 312 and on a 310 I had. The only thing I did was adjust the mower deck (level front to back).
953 nut 55,045 #6 Posted September 1, 2013 As Irv said, if you are using a mower the deck will need to be adjusted, but the narower tire is a lot easier to steer. I went back to the 6" tires on my 312-8 because the tri-ribs tended to dig in a little when making a turn on the lawn. The 953 that I plow snow with has the tri-ribs and they are great for that as well as plowing the garden, just keep them and Ag rear tires off a soft lawn. Kelly 1,029 #7 Posted September 1, 2013 The C-145 has spindles for 8" wheels, so there will be no height difference, but yes raider/charger style wheels and early C are the narrower 3 3/4" rims that are needed to mount the 4x8 tires on, I've done it on a few tractors, and you can go backwards also if you have a raider or early C and want the wide tires get newer 5 3/8" wide wheels. squonk 41,017 #8 Posted September 1, 2013 Kely, do you have any of those narrow wheels?
Kelly 1,029 #9 Posted September 1, 2013 Yes I have a few sets send me a PM
qd-16 14 #10 Posted September 1, 2013 I used the spindles and rims off an old 856 when I upgraded my 85 310-8.
timo4352 147 #11 Posted September 1, 2013 Thanks, I was wondering where I might get the spindles from, but the way it sits now with these tires it looks pretty close to level, so I could probably just leave them as is. I'll have to see with a different tire how it sits. I'm going out to check my deck for level now... So tri ribs are no good for cutting the grass, huh? I do have to cut slow though or my deck bounces. I cut in high range + first gear or low range + third gear for creeping around bushes and stuff. So maybe at slow speeds tri-ribs might be OK? --- or not at all?
sorekiwi 761 #12 Posted September 2, 2013 I have a few tractors with tri-ribs and they don't really seem to tear up the grass unless its really wet. My grass/lawn isn't exactly pristine though.

squonk 41,017 #15 Posted September 3, 2013 Will the wheels off of a 656 work on the C-145 spindles?
timo4352 147 #16 Posted September 10, 2013 A little update on my front tire thingy. I got a set of Gravley wheels for free and then a set of Carlisle sno-hogs for free too! Both used of course but the wheels cleaned up nice, tires are good off of a snowblower - and I like the ivory colored wheels so much on there I think I might just paint the rears to match. Give it an older look, I think. I think the thing looks good with the 8" tires & wheels - better than the 6". It seem to steer easier even with the aggressive tread pattern. I don't think I'm gonna change the spindles just yet - (thanks Kelly) the tires are only an inch taller overall, so really it's only sitting 1/2" taller than with the 6" tires. I've still got to hook up the blower again to see how these tires handle the weight. With these front tires and my chains on the rear this thing should be unstoppable in the snow - and mud too probably. I like 'em. And free is always good too! Tankman 3,518 #17 Posted September 10, 2013 Has anyone ever tried using hubs and bolt on rims? I've been thinking 'bout using these: http://www.mfgsupply.com/gomini/gominihubs/az2296.html
pacer 3,168 #18 Posted September 10, 2013 (edited) Those spindles call for a 4 1/2" spindle and I doubt you have that -- probably 3 inches and some, depending on which axle you have... I'm, building a couple spindles now for my D-180 and the spindle on it is 3 7/8" Edited September 10, 2013 by pacer
boovuc 1,090 #19 Posted September 10, 2013 It does look better with the bigger rims!
