Pickle 43 #1 Posted August 30, 2013 (edited) I'm new here - please bear with me!! I see that many of you are Wheel Horse experts and think since my 1986 417A is doing this that others may have experienced the problem also. It is a nice heavy duty well made tractor with a 48" side discharge mower and sometimes after engaging the PTO handle while out in the yard mowing the handle will flip back to the off position. Are there any known remedies or adjustments? Thanks! Pickle Edited August 30, 2013 by Pickle
posifour11 723 #2 Posted August 30, 2013 Is it really hard to engage the PTO? If so, it may be adjusted too tight.
Pickle 43 #3 Posted August 30, 2013 No it isn't hard to engage, it just flips out of engaged position often especially when running over bumpy ground. I can loosen it up at the trunion adjustment and give it a try. Thanks
P3x 56 #4 Posted August 30, 2013 You can try adjusting the Trunion attached to the forward end of the lever rod (Pivot point) where it attaches to the Bellcrank above the PTO. I think you back it off the threads try one turn and see if it stays engaged. If not try another until it remains engaged.
Don1977 604 #5 Posted August 30, 2013 My guess is it isn't tight enough. To adjust pull the hair pin and turn the trunnion. Shorten to tighten, and lengthen to loosen.
Foozerush 40 #6 Posted August 31, 2013 Do what Don1977 says.... I have to adjust mine a lot because I pull my deck off often, and mine spins after I remove the pin to move hoop, to take belt off the pto. So yea common problem....
Pickle 43 #7 Posted August 31, 2013 Thanks for the insights - I'll do as you suggest and hopefully that will solve the problem. Pickle
Pickle 43 #8 Posted September 1, 2013 Thanks everyone for the help - I tightened the pressure on the PTO and it hasn't disengaged since - I also installed a new WH belt and three new blades. The 417A was really slinging grass today! Pickle
posifour11 723 #9 Posted September 1, 2013 Congrats. Now you'll be good for a long time.
Pickle 43 #10 Posted September 1, 2013 (edited) Thanks posifour11, I did some minor repairs - rebushed the starter, changed the regulator and solenoid, drilled out the steering support block and installed bronze bushings in both holes, new battery, cleaned up the wiring and replaced a few terminals, adjusted carb and changed oil - hopefully I can get the snowplow back on the front of it in time for winter. It mowed for three hours without even a burp, finally ran it out of gas - may need to go in and locate the fuel filter for replacement before winter arrives. What is the average gallons of fuel per hour mowing? Pickle Edited September 1, 2013 by Pickle
Foozerush 40 #11 Posted September 1, 2013 I have a 416-8 with the Onan, and yea she drinks the gas, I go through more mowing than pushing snow, but I don't run her at wide open throttle pushing snow like mowing.... I guess a tank of fuel might last me an hour and some, my yard is small, a tank last me 3 mows front and back...
