Digger 66 3,478 #1 Posted August 29, 2013 Any of you backyard engineers ever toyed with the idea of converting one of these machines to a four wheel drive ? I'd be lying if I said I never thought about it . Seems like it might be a fun project for a machine that wasn't slated to be restored .
posifour11 723 #2 Posted August 29, 2013 There's a few floating around. There was a similar threadrecently.
boovuc 1,090 #3 Posted August 30, 2013 Search "418-AA" or search "articulated 4 x 4". Very nice mods from a few members with a lot of talent!
meadowfield 2,570 #4 Posted August 30, 2013 Search 854x4, that was a very nice conversion
Hodge71 664 #5 Posted August 30, 2013 Been throwing the idea around for a while now of taking a D series and doing it. The biggest problem I'm having is locating a suitable front axle out of a sub compact utility tractor. I actually talked to a local green/yellow and also a Massey Ferguson dealer about getting a complete front 4WD assembly. JD wanted $3300 and MF wanted $1999 for theirs. Needless to say I stopped at that point. I'm not spending that kind of money. Eventually a used one will show up for the right cost. The other option would be to buy a complete used SCUT and take all the sheet metal from a D an put it on that tractor. I would sooner do a FWA axle on a D though. CasualObserver 3,408 #6 Posted August 30, 2013 There have been some amazing ones done by one of the members here. These are all Bob Rock originals. (I don't remember seeing a build thread after its reveal)
Hodge71 664 #7 Posted August 30, 2013 Bob does great work but I'm more interested on doing a non articulator. I think it would be cool to see a regular tracor with a FWA axle under it.

Those articulated machines are awesome , but I'm with hodge71 on this .
Foozerush 40 #9 Posted August 30, 2013 I remember seeing a 4x4 simplicity legacy? At a local tractor shop maybe last year, in passing I thought to myself how hard would it be to put one on the front of my 416-8.......
CasualObserver 3,408 #10 Posted August 31, 2013 Look up the 854x4. That's more what you're talking about.
953 nut 55,049 #11 Posted August 31, 2013 (edited) Have you considered taking a Rear end and cutting the axils off short, use universals from a 1" or 1 1/8" round shaft light duty PTO and make a pair of hinged blocks with two flanged pillow blocks on the outer halves and hubs for the wheels at the end. The inner halves would be attached to the rear front end. Replace the single pulley on the rear with a double and run a belt from front to rear. If you want to run smaller wheels up front this could be done with pulley size changes. I hope you can pull this off, I would love to see it! 100 percen 4X4. Keep us posted and send photos. Digger 66 3,478 #13 Posted August 31, 2013 Look up the 854x4. That's more what you're talking about. So.... how bad is the torque-steer ? Or do you have some type of damper ? Or have you gone " whole-hog " & adapted some form of DPSâ„¢ or P/S ?

Rollerman 290 #17 Posted December 17, 2013 To add to Jason's pictures of Bob Rocks 4x4 creations. Here's a pic of Bob's 264 with 4x4 front assist conversion, he later tore it down & rebuilt it as the articulated 264x4 you see further up in Jason's post. That's my son Taylor driving years ago when we visited Bob.

victor3ranger 11 #19 Posted December 17, 2013 I really want to do this to one of my GT's, but I don't have any kind of tooling to build special parts to make it happen like some of these.

John... that post was from back in August, I don't think you guys had let that idea slip yet at that point. I'm excited to see how this latest one turns out!
